I might, its the free entry tournament isn't it? chance to win a place in the 250euro one?

Only problem I might have is if I managed to do ok in the game I may have to leave early (1am ish) as I've work friday morning.

Is it ok to just turn up on thursday evening and register and all that?

I'll probably be going in Thursday. Best I've done is 6th and when I went out it was 1 a.m. - 1.30 a.m. so if you would have to leave at 1 it might not be worth your while.

Myself and henbane will probably be going on thursday too, so we'll all be n00bs,
from what I've read of the Fitzwilliam on the forum it seems very friendly and welcoming

fitzwilliam is very nice and friendly, all the staff that work there were bang on when i was there.... no doubt hoping you will come back again!!

there was 32 people in the game i played in, came 6th and that was around 1 - 1.30 ish

remember: play is very loose before the final top up period thingy when the break comes but as soon as you cant buy back in... everyones game changes, there are regulars who go who will try and bully you at the beginning, in a friendly way! and im only saying that because i didnt want to be spending mad money buying back in

dam work getting in the way of poker

Yeah, I'll most likely be going and krattapopov is right about the intimidation tactics. It's not too bad but I picked the wrong guy to go up against far too early in the game. If it's your first time I suggest folding a lot at the start just to get a feel of the game. It's not the same as playing against your buddies, believe me.

The Fitz is a nice place, the staff are really n00b friendly and will explain stuff patiently to you if you dont know. Just ask them.

Things you need to know before playing that are different from playing seriously with your buddies is:

    1. Theres a line on the table, money goes accross this line and doesnt come back unless you win. You can make change but its polite to tell the croupier first. The croupiers are really n00b friendly too but they will enforce things like, if you throw in 50 when the bet is 100 to you, you cant take it back even if you say "oops, I didnt realise". Tough :):)

    2. Understand big and small blinds and know how they work with a dealer button. Nothing says "take my n00b money" more then someone who doesnt know that much. You can read about them online or ask here.

    3. Buy-in's only work when you have gone all-in and lost. Top ups generally happen once and are for people who have some chips left and want to top up. Buy ins generally can happen any time for any player as they choose up to a set time-limit. Top ups happen for everyone at the same time and usually its the last chance to get extra chips.

    4. Better not to show your hands ever unless called. Throwing down a big FU to the table when you bluff or have a big hand is fun with your mates. In competition, unless you have a reason to *want* them to know you just made a move on them, you're giving them information for free.

    5. When everyone still in the game is "all-in" its usual to throw the cards "on their backs". The dealer then plays the hand out without further betting.

    6. When the blinds rise they will take all the 5 euro chips back and some form of game of chance is played out (I wasnt watching and I havent seen that done before so I dont know what they did, anyone enlighten me?). The winner gets all the chips (rounded to the nearest least chip that is still valid in the game).

    DeV.

Yeah there were about 20 both times I went in but it's obviously picking up, this board contributing in no small way, so anything from 30-40. For most of the rebuy period guys can walk in and buy in so the field expands gradually for a while.

How many do they play to a table? 5? 10?
    Might just visit myself..

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 8,887 Mod ✭✭✭✭mewso

10 to a table. They squeezed an 11th in once, something I think they avoid if they can.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,806 ✭✭✭Lafortezza

Right, myself, henbane and Dapper are all going to Fitzwilliam tomorrow night. Seeing as there's a fair few boards people going, we'll be meeting up in Fireworks on the corner or Pearse St and Tara St for some grub and a few games of pool.

I'd say we'll be there for about 6 or half 6, and then leave for the Fitzwilliam at 8.30
So if you fancy a game of pool and a chat before the poker starts drop into Fireworks.
Pm for mobile if you want

yeah it is a game of chance, what they do is depending on how many odd chips you have i.e. the smallest value...

if you have 3 you will get 3 cards, if you have 2 you get 2 and if you have 1 you get 1 card.

the person with the highest card gets all the odds or if there is a draw then the odds are split

happened to me 3 times before i realised how it worked!

I shall also be heading down to the fitzwilliam tonight, quite looking forward to poker with people other than the usual mates. Will try and make it round to fireworks as well, so i'm sure i'll see some of you tonight at some stage.

Damn, can't make it. Good luck lads!

Could someone tell me how the poker tonight works exactly? I can't work it out from their webpage:
    ("Texas Hold-em"
Free entry satellite to €250 game (Last Thursday every month)Unlimited Re-buys for first 1 and a quarter hours @ €10 each )

Does that mean only on the last thurs of the month you get a free entry(ie. a free tenner of chips), but tonight its a tenner to enter?

    Thanks

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 4,662 Mod ✭✭✭✭Hyzepher

It's free to enter tonight - you win free entry into the €250 game on the last Thursday of the month. Although it is free tonight, you have to pay for any re-buys or top ups

Well - went along last night with me m8 Gav and both of us made the final table - as did Mr Pudding and DapperGant. Gavin & Mr Pudding winning free seats to the €250 comp at the end of the month, myself just missing out (4th) but I got €60 towards an entry to the €250. DapperGant was unlucky and started the final table as chip leader but had no luck from then on.

All in all a great night - especially as I got to the final table without a rebuy. Although I was a bit pissed about getting so far and not coming away with a seat - damn those two eights in the hole (beaten by two nines in the hole).

Was so pissed that I went and played Blackjack to try and get some revenge - ended up winning BIG and will now buy a seat at the €250.

For my first visit I was very impressed with the place and had a good laugh - especially listening to the regulars giving me the 'heads-up' on some players - gas.

Again well done to Mr Pudding & me m8 Gavin - well played.

Was there last night as well, have to say enjoyed the night thourougly even though i went out just about after 12. Could blame a run of bad luck or some other valid reason but unfortunately it was just a poor poker judgement that got me there. First time i've played anywhere else but the house with a few mates and a few bevvies and was a bit intimidated by the whole set-up first time through the doors, but the dealers were all excellent and very easy to talk to. So definetly an easy place for a first timer to get to know the ropes.

As to the poker itself i found myself not playing hands that i should have played because i just wasn't sure of myself or my game (bit intimidated for no real reason at all), then getting pissed at myself for not playing an obvious hand and to make up for it going for a hand that wasn't looking too pretty, end result - not a good display of poker at all, 1 rebuy and a top up and still gone around the 12 mark. But had a good time and shall be returning next week were the intimidation factor of 'card hall virgin' will be gone and i can get down to playing some decent poker. :)

Oh and a big well done to Mr Pudding and Gavin, fair play gentlemen.

Well played to the lads who got the free entrys, and nice one on Hyzpher showing his blackjack skillz!
I was happy enough, I think I got to about the last 15 or so, seeing as there was near 40 there at the start and it was my first time I'm satisfied.
The dealers were very good, explaining rules and making it nice and simple, thank god they do all the chip counting for you, there was times when I would have needed a calculator for some of the side pots.

I got decent cards throughout the night, probably saw a few too many flops with weakish cards and dribbled my chips away, instead of folding and waiting for something better.

There was a nice bit of banter about the tables as well. I was chatting to Hyzepher, Dapper and musician (who explained some of the finer points, ta!), said hello to pudding and dakeryus.

I found it a bit hard to tell who the better players were (apart from the big stacks obviously :) ) as there was usually a big raise before the flop and most people would fold.

I think my best hand was when I was dealt pocket 3's, decided to stay in to see the flop, flop threw up 2 more 3's and I bet too big to entice people in the hand and everyone folded :( total waste of a poker.

I'll definitely go again, I was watching one or two of the cash games and while they looked fairly intimidating I'd be tempted when I get a bit more experience.
    All in!

My first time there, and was the last one kicked out before the last table was joined up, so am quite happy with that. Had a couple of good wins, most noteably coming just before the 10 minute break, when I took a big hand to be sitting pretty going into the freeze out period.

Night started strangely as when myself and a friend walked in we knew the pit boss, and he knew us by name from another casino. Registered at 9 ran to local for a quick one came back and got started. A regular 'Mark' went all in, before the flop, after all the table had called the blind. One person saw him and he won on the river card. Then next hand, goes all in again before the flop, same guy calls him, and mark wins again. Not a bad start tripling your chips in 10 mins. Was definately an eye opener.

Will go again and bring more friends.

Also a big sorry to the guy who was involved in the controversial pot with me when the dealers f@%k up cost him the pot, and gave it to me.

Was that you? I was at that table - the nutter at the end. I have to say that I thought it was the wrong ruling but I suppose you have to go with what the house says.
