    Learn to play
    Casino Poker Rules
    Poker School Online

Play Online for Play or Real Money The poker side of Ireland's premier bookies.
    Paddy Power Poker
Victor Chandler Poker - Also Racing Post Poker
Games: Hold'em Only - Limit/Pot-Limit/No-Limit Cash Games/Single Table Tournaments/Multi-Table Tournaments (one of my favs)
Standard: Varies alot. I recommend it for newbies as in big Multi-Table tournaments you get alot of bad players. Then again maybe playing the best is the only way newbie or otherwise.
    Ladbrokes Poker
    Games: Hold'em/Omaha/7 Card Stud/5 Card Stud - Limit/Pot-Limit/No-Limit Cash Games/Sinlge and Multi-Table tournaments.
Standard: As with VC quite mixed but it has the facility to record notes on players which can be handy if you want to remember who that idiot was who went all-in with 62o (if you dont know what 62o is then read some of guides)
    Ultimatebet.com
Games: The same as Ladbrokes with even more (Pineapple???, Triple Draw/Omaha 8/b etc.)
Standard: In my experience very high. If I want some very stiff opposition in a tourney with good rewards then I go here.
    Poker Stars
    Games: As Ultimate Bet
Standard: Possibly the highest out there with very good money to be won in tournaments if you are good enough as well as being home of the WSOOP (online world champs)

    Articles/Guides/News
CardPlayer.com - a great site with great articles from Phil Helmuth amongst others.
Two Plus Two - the guys who publish Sklansky's poker books (the books every aspiring poker player should read) as well as excellent forums.
Hold'em Hand Analysis - for the statto's out there.
Play Winning Poker - large archive of good articles on poker[/url]
Poker In Europe - news, plyer profiles and details of big poker tournaments in Europe (worth checking to see when the big names might be visiting.

    Irish Casinos
The Merrion - plush joint with regular tournaments and host of most of the Big Tournaments in Dublin.
The Fitzwilliam Card Club - I'm starting to prefer this to the Merrion as it's less intimidating, friendly, has a similar Tournament line-up during the week and even better has a free tourney every Thursday at 9p.m. to win entry to the Big one on the last thursday of the month. Cheap and fun.

    Recommended Books
The Theory of Poker - the undisputed Bible.

I'm not going to mention anymore books for now because obviously I 'aint read them all but any Sklansky book on Hold'em is worth it's weigth etc.
    anything else guys?.........

Now Dev get off your arse and make me a mod and I'll make this a sticky.

    Poker on TV

Currently (as of the 12th March) I'm aware of a couple of different poker progs on the box, unfortunately they're only available on satellite (NTL Digital as well possibly?):

    1) Challenge TV, weekdays from 10pm, showing a range of tournaments, including 'showdown at the sands', 'Celebrity poker club', and some of the WSOP Tournaments (for the month of March).

    2) Home and Leisure - Late Night Poker, week-days, at 11:30pm.

    3) Sky Vegas currently showing poker Millionaire games, from 2am-4am (Sky+ is handy here!).

    Any missing?

Hole Em Excellence by Lou Krieger is a good book to read. Has a very good start chart at the back suggesting what hands to play in early, mid and late position.

Less of a Poker Guide, and more of a Poker journey, Anthony Holden's Big Deal: One Year as a Professional Poker Player, is a very entertaining read, for anyone who might dream of Poker as a profession, or just wants some inside gossip on some of the Poker legends..

A riveting read, it won't teach you anything about Poker, but it might teach you a little about yourself, if, like me, you can find parallels in some of London Tony's experiences...

Well worth a read.. If anyone wants to borrow it, PM me..

I know the basic format of hold'em but am unfamiliar with some of the terminology and playing blinds etc. Just wanted to ask if that book musician recommends at the top of this thread is the best starting point for me?

I'd also be interested to know if there are any other n00bs out there that would be interested in holding a couple of "Nationwide" division poker games with low limits etc. (i.e. buy €20 or so worth of chips and play with that for the night). Maybe some of the more advanced players might consider holding some "card schools" where they'd teach us n00bs where we made our mistakes in the hands we lose where we shouldn't have?

    http://www.texasholdem-poker.com/odds.php

thats a nice easy, comprehensive account of some of the more usual odds questions you find yourself facing and the theory of how to work them out.

Below is a more challenging (but more comprehensive) list of odds and also the math to work them out.

Just finished reading this myself, was interesting, although I was cringing a couple of times when he says something like 'looked down to see the King and Four of Diamonds, a very playable hand in early position', then two paragraphs later is wondering why he just got busted out of yet another $1000 tourney :)

Sky Sports every Friday night at 10pm has the WPC event from The Merrion Casino Club. Also I agree with Conar - Doyle Brunsons book is The Bible, although be ware, Doyle Brunson himself is broke!!!!

Super System (the nl section) is a great read, and anyone who wants to play at a high level needs to read it. HOWEVER, the advice given is for DEEP STACKED no limit games, against reasnable opponents. You will go broke very quickly playing the way he advised in other conditions.

Deep stacked is where you have at least 100 times the BB in your stack.

You'd be Deep stacked if you won the 100k on offer in The Vault at The merrion

Lads, I know little or nothing about poker, it seems like an intresting game.. I was looking at that school poker, is it worth paying the money to become a member and learn how to play?
    many thanks

I would recommend buying a few books and playing online. You can play with play money on most of the sites, then when your ready deposit 25$ and play the micro limit games.

Hiya Lenny. Just to let you know the lads on this site and www.suitedaces.com where more than happy to help me last Friday in the Fitzwilliam on my first night at a card club. I have played for a few months between friends but never in a proper card club.

I suppose what I trying to say is it is well worth a tenner to play in the Fitz from time to time getting tips and playing aginst these guys...... once you feel comfortable with the basics and have played for a while.

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,881 ✭✭✭bohsman

If you really havent got a clue how to play come down as early as possible around 4 on a thursday and brendan or someone will probably be happy to give you the basics then you can watch/play in a sit and go

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,420 ✭✭✭garrettod

    Hi Lenny

If your thinking about learning, there are seveal Poker games to learn. Probably the most popular is Texas Hold 'em.

Suggest you consider learning online for free - there are lots of useful sites / threads where you can get all the info for free & then just have some practice games on some of the poker sites.

Check out Rpoints (link above) for a start, there is a poker discussion forum & lots of useful links to various sites, lessons etc

    Thanks,

    G.

bohsman do you wokr there? who is the guys you mention? i suppose it would be pritty pointless to take money down.. for it all to be won hehe

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,881 ✭✭✭bohsman

no I dont work there, I do spend a good bit of time there though, the 1 table tournaments that are played on thursday afternoons are 10 euro entry so if you get the basics off someone a tenner isnt too much to spend practising and then theres a free tourny at half nine, you can learn a lot if you bring 10/20 quid for the night

Does anyone know what its called when the card dealers in casinos kind-of flick the cards from one hand to another?

No its where one hand holds the cards about 20cm on top of the other hand and they fall down onto your other hand real fast
