    Hi

Can anyone tell me if the Irish Council For Social Housing or Centre For Independent Living provide training for people with disabilities to enable them to live independently?

I am currently waiting on a place in one of the IWA's training apartments in Clontarf, but I've been told that it'll be another 6 months(at least)before anything happens!!!

I'm living in a completely unsuitable house for my whole life & am totally fed up with it!!!!

Hi Mental Mickey, while I'm not familiar with the training apartments you certainly should be looking at getting your current place of residence adapted.

    http://www.oasis.gov.ie/housing/housing_grants/disabled_persons_grants.html

On a side note, it would be a good idea if we could get a sticky going on the various entitlements and services which are available.

    Thanks for that, Rev Hellfire.

My Dad(who owns the house)would like to get adaptions made to our existing home, but he is(quite rightly)afraid of the costs involved!!??

Is there anyone else with a disability out there who is currently waiting on a stint in one of these apartments?? If so, how long have you been told you'll be waiting.....?

    Hi Mickey,

I'm actually in the process of getting this done and have just recieved finanical approval. All in all its a pretty straight forard procedure (esp if you use on the contractors the local auth uses) but it can take a few months for it to go through so there's certainly no reason to at least not get the ball rolling.

Might be worth breaking this topic out of the links thread though. We need a new (more active) mod and I'm a man on a mission.

What I MEANT to ask was:

"Is there anyone waiting on a stint in the TRAINING apartments out in the IWA headquarters in Clontarf? If so, how long have you been waiting?

I hope this site keeps their content relevant and up-to-date. The www.disability.ie site tried to do something like this, but the content was not maintained. Direct Enquiries have done this for the UK (or some parts of the UK).

    www.smallerworld.ie
SmallerWorld.ie went live last Thursday July 12th and so far has reviews of a few pubs and restaurants. It's aimed at everybody, not just people with mobility difficulties. As a wheelchair user myself I cant count the amount of times I've been asked to go somewhere only to find it has steps or standard toilets or whatever... all when i arrived! Knowledge is power and all that so hence my idea for the site... bringing awareness to everyone!
