Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

BMW 3 Series coupe SE 2007

    Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a BMW 3 series coupe SE 2007. Should I go for 2L 4 cyl or 2.5 6 cyl? Both give 168HP but I'd prefer 2L for petrol running costs. Both have 80,000 miles. I know diesel engine is better etc. but none available in coupe at the mo.

    Cheers,

    J

I've had a 07 2L coupe with the 4 cyl engine for a number of years and found it fine. Petrol costs were ok considering it was a 2L so that was the main advantage for me when I was deciding between the 4/6 cyl.
    What's your budget?

No contest, the 2.5 litre 6 cylinder imo. Much sweater engine than the 2.0 litre.

A 2007 E92 325i would probably have a detuned 3l from the 330i so you would be looking at a big difference in tax. It would have a good bit more than 168 HP though, more in the region of 220.

if you are not doing much mileage, 100% the 6 pot 2.5L. Also the 2.5 puts out 218bhp, the 2L puts out 170bhp... Most 2007 E92 will be the 2500cc, not the detuned 3L engine from late 07 / early 08 on...

    320
    Running costs
    Urban mpg 32.8 mpg CO2 emissions 151 g/km
Extra Urban mpg 52.3 mpg Annual Tax £180
    Average mpg 42.8 mpg
    Performance
Engine power 170 bhp Engine size 1995 cc
Acceleration (0-62mph) 8.1 seconds Top speed 143 mph
    Wheel drive Rear Wheel Drive

    325
    Running costs
    Urban mpg 23.3 mpg CO2 emissions 203 g/km
Extra Urban mpg 45.6 mpg Annual Tax £285
    Average mpg 33.6 mpg
    Performance
Engine power 218 bhp Engine size 2497 cc
Acceleration (0-62mph) 6.9 seconds Top speed 153 mph
    Wheel drive Rear Wheel Drive

Ill just throw out there, that you could buy an E46 m sport, for far cheaper and its a nicer looking car than the E92 m sport in my opinion (which are still going for mental money) and certainly a lot nicer looks wise than the SE... Depends on what your priorities are though...

Yes, rather confusingly, the later 2007 E92 325i's actually have a 2996 cc engine generating 218bhp @ 6100 revs. It is slightly under 3l so the second highest tax rate of €1400 applies.

Those tax figures are from a UK site I assume?

All the costs will be that bit more expensive, and it all adds up.

Really, the 325i performance is more than adequate for most drivers.

yeah... dear god, even the 6 series over there are £285, the 4.4 litre, the tax must be capped at that rate!!!

Not sure if advert is correct?

According to the government website, a car registered after 2001 with emissions of over 255 g/km suffers a rate of £500 per annum.

We are probably going off-topic for thread, but the UK system is on principle as unjustifiable as the Irish - but because the rates are lower, people tend not to complain as much.
