    http://www.cinemablend.com/television/HBO-Picks-Up-Woody-Harrelson-Matthew-McConaughey-Series-True-Detective-42029.html
Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey project True Detective has found its cable home. HBO is finalizing the deal to pick up the project with a straight-to-series order following a bidding war between the cable networks. Two big names like these were bound to spark a lot of interest.
Earlier in the month, the project set to star best friends Harrelson and McConaughey was announced and prepared to pitch to the cable networks. It generated plenty of interest and it looks like HBO has come up on top according to Deadline; the deal is nearly done with an eight-episode first season order.
True Detective is about two detectives (Harrelson and McConaughey) who investigate an over fifteen-year-old murder. The format will move back and forth between testimony from the present day investigation and what happened in 1995, when the murder occurred. Each season will follow this same structure, but will feature a new story. Harrelson and McConaughey will be on board for the first season, and a new set of stars will take over should the series get renewed.
The series already has two episodes and a bible written, and also has Cary Fukunaga signed on to direct. It seems writer Nic Pizzolato has signed an overall deal with HBO, and this series is part of the package, so we should be hearing more from him soon.

McConaughey best work (besides taking his shirt off :p) is in the legal/crime films so this should be good

    http://www.spoilertv.com/2012/05/devious-maids-begins-staffing-aka.html

ABC has begun staffing for Devious Maids, based on the Mexican format, is a soap with four female leads (Ana Ortiz, Dania Ramirez, Roselyn Sanchez, Judy Reyes), maids with ambition and dreams of their own who work for the rich and famous in Beverly Hills.
When pilots begin staffing it basically means they are unofficially picked up, also staffing are NBC comedies The New Normal and Save Me. Go On already has a series order.
ABC's Mistresses and NBC's Hannibal also have series order but they were ordered straight to series without pilots.

Starz And Michael Bay Take To The High Seas For New Original Series "Black Sails"

Eight-Episode Season One Commitment for Pirate Adventure Tales of Captain Flint

Starz to Retain All Domestic and International Rights Including TV, Home Video, and Digital

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., May 3, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Starz Chief Executive Officer Chris Albrecht announced the straight-to-series greenlight of "Black Sails" (working title) from executive producer Michael Bay. The new STARZ Original series is expected to air in 2014. The eight-episode first season of the pirate adventure centers on the tales of Captain Flint and his men, and takes place twenty years prior to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic "Treasure Island."

Flint, the most brilliant and most feared pirate captain of his day, takes on a fast-talking young addition to his crew who goes by the name John Silver. Threatened with extinction on all sides, they fight for the survival of New Providence Island, the most notorious criminal haven of its day – a debauched paradise teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by both its enlightened ideals and its stunning brutality.

"Starz is excited to be working with a visionary like Michael,'" said Albrecht. "Along with the high-octane action that is a hallmark of a Michael Bay production, it has the elements that Starz originals are striving to bring to the premium landscape: epic, larger than life, cinematic storytelling. The series is also a property we believe will appeal to the global content marketplace with broadcasters around the world."

"I'm excited to branch out into television," says Michael Bay, the record-breaking director/producer of such big screen hits as Transformers and Bad Boys, "especially doing a long-form series for STARZ, a network known for supporting cutting edge programming."

Following the model of the "Spartacus" franchise and "Magic City," Starz will retain all domestic and international rights to the dramatic series, including television, home video, and digital.

"Black Sails" will be executive produced by Michael Bay (Transformers, Armageddon, Pearl Harbor) and his Platinum Dunes partners Brad Fuller and Andrew Form [producers on The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) and Nightmare on Elm Street (2009)]. The series is created by showrunner and executive producer Jon Steinberg (creator "Jericho," "Human Target") and co-executive producer Robert Levine ("Touch").

The production is set to shoot at Cape Town Studios in Cape Town, South Africa later this year.

    Series is-a-go :)

    http://www.deadline.com/2012/05/directv-orders-rogue-tv-drama-summer-2013/

DIRECTV announced today that it has ordered ten episodes of an original suspense-drama, ROGUE, starring award-winning actress Thandie Newton (Mission Impossible 2, Crash) from leading independent studio Entertainment One Television (eOne) and Greenroom Entertainment. ROGUE marks DIRECTV’s first foray into commissioning an original drama series exclusively for its customers. Production is slated to begin in August 2012 and the series will premiere next summer 2013 on DIRECTV’s Audience Network.

ROGUE revolves around a morally and emotionally conflicted cop, Grace (Newton), who is tormented by the possibility that her own actions contributed to her son’s death. Grace’s search for the truth is further complicated by her forbidden relationship with the crime boss who may have played a hand in the crime. With the addition of ROGUE, DIRECTV expands on its commitment to offer quality, exclusive programming to its customers after establishing great success in providing a home and new creative life to Emmy-winning series such as Damages and Friday Night Lights, and exclusive, first-run series like Underbelly, The Slap and the upcoming series, Hit & Miss.

“There’s an excitement in the hallways of DIRECTV as ROGUE will be the first original series on the Audience Network that will be built from the ground up with the specific goal to provide DIRECTV customers with a premium entertainment experience they can’t get anywhere else,” said Chris Long, senior vice president Entertainment and Production, DIRECTV. “The unique partnership that Patty Ishimoto, vice president and general manager of Audience Network, struck with eOne and Greenroom Entertainment and her relationship with Momentum Entertainment has helped realize that goal. Together they bring a wealth of expertise in the areas of production, global distribution, brand integration and sponsorship to our domestic distribution and marketing prowess.”

“ROGUE is a powerful drama which represents a new model for the entertainment industry by opening up maximum creative opportunities to assemble a stellar international cast led by Thandie Newton and topline writing and creative talent,” said Nick Hamm of Greenroom Entertainment. “Our launch of ROGUE in less than a year since I forged a partnership with Momentum Entertainment Group is a testament to the results-driven team behind this project. We are in the business of making premium contemporary dramas that have mass appeal. I’m thrilled to collaborate on ROGUE with such forward thinking partners as DIRECTV and eOne who see the potential of this new model to produce scripted television shows of the highest caliber.”

“eOne is thrilled to be collaborating with talented and creative executives like Nick and Matthew on ROGUE, the natural evolution of our excellent relationship with DIRECTV,” said Michael Rosenberg, executive vice president, U.S. Scripted for eOne Television. “Adding Thandie Newton to the mix confirms that we have all the right ingredients to make amazing television.”

ROGUE will be executive produced by renowned UK Producer/Director Nick Hamm for Greenroom Entertainment; John Morayniss and Michael Rosenberg for eOne; and Steven Marrs from Momentum Entertainment Group, who also helped broker the deal with DIRECTV. Series creator Matthew Parkhill (The Caller) will also serve as writer and supervising producer. In addition to airing on DIRECTV’s Audience Network, ROGUE will air on Astral’s The Movie Network (Eastern Canada) and Corus Entertainment’s Movie Central (Western Canada).

Series Is from Award-winning Creator of “Luther,” Neil Cross, and Acclaimed Film Producers Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (“Gladiator,” “Men in Black,” “The Ring”)

NEW YORK CITY -- May 14, 2012 -- From the award-winning creator of “Luther,” Neil Cross, and successful producing team of Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald (“Gladiator,” “Men in Black,” “The Ring”) comes an extraordinary action-adventure series “Crossbones” -- with an unexpected moral center where one can't be sure whether the pirates or the British crown are the villains.

Ten episodes of “Crossbones” have been ordered and production will begin in the fall.

The announcement was made today by Robert Greenblatt, Chairman, NBC Entertainment.

It’s 1715 on the Bahamian island of New Providence, the first functioning democracy in the Americas, where the diabolical pirate Edward Teach, aka Blackbeard, reigns over a rogue nation of thieves, outlaws and miscreant sailors. Part shantytown, part marauder’s paradise, this is a place like no other on earth – and a mounting threat to international commerce.

To gain control of this fearsome society, Tom Lowe, a highly skilled undercover assassin, is sent to the pirates’ haven to take down the brilliant and charismatic Blackbeard. But The Closer Lowe gets, the more he finds that his quest is not so simple. Lowe can’t help but admire the political ideals of Blackbeard, whose thirst for knowledge knows no bounds – and no law. But Lowe is not the only danger to Blackbeard’s rule. He is a man with many villainous rivals and one great weakness – a passionately driven woman whom he cannot deny.

Parkes and MacDonald serve as executive producers. Cross will write and also executive-produce the series. Ted Gold (“Three Rivers”) also is an executive producer. The series will be produced by Parkes/MacDonald Productions; Georgeville Television (GVTV), Reliance Entertainment/Motion Picture Capital's new TV Studio; and Universal Television.

That looks like it will be as disappointing as the Pillars mini-series. The best part of the book was about the black death which seems almost absent from the trailer.

I loved Pillars of the Earth

I do remember complaints from the book readers though

Maybe the book readers have different expectations and are being a bit harsh in their judgements?

Ken Follets's book are huge, of course there have to be major cuts and editing for a TV adaptation

There wasn't major cuts, there was a whole load of new crap with magic dreams and the like, a weird distortion of King Stephen and a fantasy version of Empress Matilda, neither of whom were major characters in the book, which was about how ordinary people suffered during The Anarchy, not about the major players in it. Follet's books are realistic period books, they don't have magic or prophetic dreams. The mini-series was seriously over the top and laced with really sub-standard fantasy elements.

    http://www.deadline.com/2012/06/hbo-orders-charles-randolph-cold-war-spy-drama-pilot-aaron-paul-in-talks-to-star/

HBO has given a pilot order to Cold War spy drama The Missionary. Emmy-winning Breaking Bad co-star Aaron Paul is in talks for the lead in the project, from film/TV writer Charles Randolph (The Interpreter) and producer Stephen Levinson as well as best-selling author Malcolm Gladwell and frequent Levinson collaborator Mark Wahlberg.

Set in Berlin in the late 1960s, The Missionary, written by Randolph, centers on a young American missionary (Paul) who becomes involved with the CIA. Randolph and New Yorker writer Gladwell, who are friends, had been working on an idea for a spy project when they met with Levinson and Wahlberg, who also had been looking to do a spy drama. The four joined forces and last fall took the project to HBO, where Levinson and Wahlberg have produced four series: Boardwalk Empire, Entourage, In Treatment and How To Make It In America. Randolph, Levinson, Gladwell and Wahlberg executive produce The Missionary, which HBO is producing in association with Levinson’s Leverage and Wahlberg’s Closest to the Hole Prods. The Missionary is the second Cold War-era cable spy drama pilot ordered this year, along with FX’s The Americans, about undercover KGB spies in the U.S. played by Keri Russell and Matthew Rhys. At HBO, it joins another period drama, Prohibition mob series Boardwalk Empire, also executive produced by Levinson and Wahlberg.

The Missionary would mark Paul’s followup to his breakout role opposite Bryan Cranston on the dark AMC drama Breaking Bad, which has earned him three Emmy nominations and a win. The series will end its run with a two-part, 16-episode fifth season that premieres July 15. Missionary also would mark Paul’s return to HBO, where he recurred on Big Love. On the big screen, the UTA-repped actor starred in this year’s Sundance entry Smashed.

another marvelous write up richard ;), i always look forward to your opinion on these lovely thread you create:D,

i love that aaron paul is getting some recognition, and now being trusted to lead a show, its could be very strange seeing him in a role outside of breaking bad, but i suppose i said the same about cranston after malcolm in the middle,

i dont mind that there going back to the 60s but i would have loved to see HBO take on a show like this but have it based in the present,

Oh no. Psycho is perfect, and it's not like there's even material that they could work from (I think the other books written by the author were sequels rather then prequels). They would have to get an amazing writing team.

Not holding out hope for this at all. Even if it's good, I don't know if I could watch it.

They really have run out of ideas in tv land! Constant reboots/rehash/rip offs of classic tv and movies.

This one gets me angry,Psycho is my favourite movie of all time. There was already an abysmal remake of the movie a few years back and now some bright spark has decided to do a prequel!

Safe to say i'll give this one a wide berth.

Or do we wait for an American remake with prettier people?.

Looks well from the shots and has a sound idea for a story.

Box set buy possibly (I'm sure there'll be one on line with subs ;) )

The plot seems a lot like Handling the Undead by John Ajvide Lindqvist, which is a pretty excellent book. Also there are smacks of the extremely short-lived Babylon Fields.
