Eco friendly insulation

    Yesterday at the store I saw eco insulation. After closer examination it looks like sandwich of aluminium foil, bubble wrap, foam, aluminium foil and so on, totalling of 10 layers. Thickness approx 1 cm.

    Store manager claim is good as mineral wool insulation 6-8 cm thick.

    Anyone had experience with this type of insulation?

    Its bullsh1t that it works the same as 60mm rockwool.
    Also bullsh1t that its eco friendly, how is it recyclable or biodegradable?
    It will provide some insulation but the clue is in the agrément cert, ask to see if it has one and it will detail the performance of the material.
    Sheepswool is Eco insulation, not cheap but not flammable either which is an important point in a camper.

    The r value of that stuff is based on an air gap either side usually 25mm, in a van you will little or none or too much depending on the location so the r value is much less.

    Wouldn't put any wool product in though they can hold condensation leading to rust even with a vapour barrier you'll have condensation.

    I think you'll find the manufacturer makes no claims about it being ecofriendly its just the name its resold under ecoquilt - its probably made by ybs under a different name. Anyway insulation is eco friendly by reducing energy consumption and therefore emissions / carbon footprint. Theres probably more enviromentally damaging substances in a single bag of bituminous coal that a whole roll of that stuff. Multilayer foil can give you a higher r value in restricted space / renovation settings such as where the rafter dimensions don't allow proper insulation depth without battening which may reduce the living space and head height significantly.

    A sweeping statement saying it does not have the same insulating properties as 60mm rockwool is a little unjust.
    Just because its not recyclable or biodegradable does not by definition mean its not eco friendly.

    Its an emotive subject and given the fanciful u values that companies like actis have been quoting and their misleading claims in their printed materials.

    The first link the claim they investigated was is the product the same as 210mm of mineral wool quilt insulation. That is very different to what the ops case is. 6-8cm is 60-80mm.
    Im not sure what the second link is for/about or prob not relevant since maybe people are mixing up their measurements.

    The product linked to is three times the thickness of the product the op described do the math. The links are to illustrate the faulty methodology these manufacturers are using to arrive at their claims.

    The only factual rating for these multilayer foil products is the core resistance.
