Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Interested in studying science next year if I get my points hopefully, would love to specialise in something like Genetics/Neuroscience/Microbiology (Definitely biology based!) and I know I will need to do Chemistry for these subjects too, I haven't done Chemistry for my LC, just Biology and I'm worried I'm going to find it really difficult next year. Has anyone had any experience with this? I like studying and stuff but I'm scared a lot of people will be way ahead having done Chem for leaving cert.

    Hello :)

    Not sure I'm much use to you (I'm in science but did chem for the LC) but here goes...

    Firstly, lots of people that haven't done chem wind up doing it in first year. If memory serves, they run a sort of crash course before classes start to get you up to speed and there might have been special small group tutorials for anyone with no chem throughout term (which is good because the main tutorials had about a hundred people in them so not the best if you're getting lost). You won't be the only one and there'll be support available to you.

    Secondly, I'm not sure how much of an addition LC chem even is. The first week/week and a half of lectures was pretty much the leaving cert course so I was bored out of my skull and stopped paying attention; I was in very bad habits when the actual new material started. At least if it's new to you from the start you won't make that mistake. On top of that, some of the LC material might not be quite right and trying to remember what's right and isn't can be a pain. Also, from talking to various people in the course, the country seems to have a shortage of good chem teachers so even people that had done it before but had an awful teacher needed help. So I don't think people will necessarily be way ahead of you. Depends how much work you're willing to put in as well, someone without LC chem that works well will beat someone with it that dosses all year. After all, your weekly lab write ups are worth 25% in each chem module (or at least that was the system when I was in first year)

    Thirdly, you only have to do it for a year for most if not all the bio options, then you can be lazy and do geology like me XD
