Saturday June 2nd at The Underground in Kennedy's.Westland Row.D2

Lunar Disko and Electric City present:

The Egyptian Lover feat Jamie Jupiter - LIVE [Egyptian Empire- Los Angeles]
    Skkatter [skkatter.net]
    DJ Simon Conway [Electric City]

This coming June bank holiday sees another special Electric City/Lunar
Disko event @ The Underground. Flying straight in from Los Angeles,
USA, is the king of the 808 beats, Egyptian Lover aka Greg Broussard.
Alongside Miami electro hero Jamie Jupiter, 'The Lover' will be
providing a slick jam of oldschool vocoder electro beats straight from
his famous 808 machine. A Live show not to be missed for fans of all
things electro and hip-hop....The Lover rules the 808 like no other!

Support on the night comes in the form of EC resident DJ Simon Conway
and Fairview's very own 'Freakaholic' Skkatter who will be providing
plenty of oldschool electro jams before 'The Lover' and Jupiter take
    to the stage.

The Egyptian Lover started out as a D.J. in Los Angeles with Uncle
Jam's Army doing dances at the L.A. Sports Arena with over 10,000
party people, and then began recording around Los Angeles in 1983 as a
member of the Radio Crew and later that year released "Dial-A-Freak"
as part of Uncle Jamm's Army. The Egyptian Lover released his debut
solo single and club hit "Egypt, Egypt" in 1984. It was followed by
more dance hits, including "And My Beat Goes Boom", "What Is a DJ If
He Can't Scratch", "Egypt Egypt", and "Girls", with even more that
came like "You're so Fine", "The Lover", "Sexy Style", "The Alesby
    Inn" and "Freak a Holic".

The Lover also established his own record company, Egyptian Empire
Records, which included electro artists such as Rodney O & Joe Cooley
    .

Similar in style and feel to those other artists, Egyptian Lover and
related West Coast electro groups and producers such as World Class
Wrecking Cru, Chris "The Glove" Taylor and the Unknown DJ took beatbox
manipulation to new levels, fusing signature loops with ample
syncopation, darker, modal melodies and impressive turntable tricks.
While Egyptian Lover records didn't start appearing until several
years after the New York and Miami electro scenes were already in full
swing, by the mid-'80s Egyptian Lover cuts like Egypt, Egypt" were
standards among club DJs, particularly in the breakdance scene.

Early cuts such as "Computer Love" and "Dance" were among Egyptian
Lover's most experimental, with the material appearing through the
latter half of the '80s increasingly flirting with full-blown rap by
adding more vocals and melodic hooks. While more of his material dates
from the latter phase, it's his earlier releases that remain his most
accomplished, and they're routinely namechecked by a new generation of
producers such as Autechre and I-F inspired by electro's first wave.

In 2005 "The Egyptian Lover" released his first single since 1994,
entitled "Party" and backed with "Dancefloor",he then followed that
12" with the album Platinum Pyramids in Feb. 2006. By the end of 2006
The Egyptian Lover went into the studio with Jamie Jupiter and
recorded "UFO" and "Futuristic" to be on the new "Keep it Hot" 12"
coming out in the summer of 2007.

Electro legend Egyptian Lover makes his Irish debut on Saturday June 2nd @ The Underground, Kennedys. Below is an interview from 1988 with the big man himself along with some videos to get you in the mood for The Lover's show on June 2nd.....

How long have you actually been running your own business?

About five to six years now.

About five to six years. Have you owned your own label all of this time?

    Yeeesss!!!

"EGYPT, EGYPT" was your first single and that was released on your own label.

Correct. That label was called, FREAK ME PEOPLE, and I had a partner who I since got rid of and started a label of my own.

So now it’s you and you alone. No shareholders whatsoever?

Except for the albums, which are on NEW BEAT RECORDS, which is distributed by Priority Records.

Back in the breakdancing days, "EGYPT, EGYPT" was the only sound we would hear. It was a big smash!! I haven't listened to some of your latest products and that is probably because I’m a female and you are what we call the Hugh Heffner of Rap. You know what I mean? All of your records are about...

    About life.

Don't beat around the bush. Your records are about sex. Blatant sex! Why do you?

No. It's not about sex. It's all about being an Egyptian Lover.

Aw come on! An Egyptian Lover?! Just look at these titles, "GIRLS, " "DOLLAR FREAK, " "BEING LESBIAN" which is about a hotel.

A hotel. That's right, where a girl took me once.

Let me ask this. Is this bragging or is it factual. Where you come from ... are you known as a Lover?

Yes. You want some phone numbers to prove it?

    No. (HA-HA)

Seriously... I have lots of references.

Yeah, OK. Tell me, is there any particular reason why you chose to come this route? Is it because you thought the records would sell?

    No. It's because I wanted a Benz.

Because you wanted a Benz. That's honest.

It's a job. It's also fun. I like this kind of work and like to see other people doing it as well. That is why I started a label and have guys like RODNEY O making records.

Tell me... do you ever plan on gearing toward a different style or will you always be, EGYPTIAN LOVER?

If I change my name, then I will change my style of music. But as long as my name is EGYPTIAN LOVER, my music shall remain the same.

Soooo... this sex thing. What are you trying to say? Pro-sex... Down with sex... Anti-sex... What??

I'm saying, "MORE SEX!" Always more sex!

Do you think the West Coast sound differs from the East?

When I started making records, there were no West Coast rappers, so to me, there is no West Coast sound. As far as fast up-tempo stuff ... It's an EGYPTIAN LOVER SOUND. So the West Coast rapper that does a fast up-tempo ... got it from me.

    ee2.jpg

I'm backing up on that because you were the first person I heard out of L.A. with that beat. So, it's not a West Coast sound... it's an Egyptian Lover sound. That may very well be true. Hmmmmm.

That's right! That's true! Now Rodney O's stuff is not like my stuff. But if you want to classify it as the West Coast sound, be my guest. But the Rodney stuff is not the West Coast sound, it's the Rodney O sound ... it's the Egyptian Lover sound ... or it's the Unknown sound.

Whatever... that's why you drive a Caddy and 3 Benz’s?

Rodney drives the Cadillac. I drive 3 Benz's.

Are you pulling my leg and are you clocking that many dollars?

I'm not putting your leg. Dollars? No comment. The IRS.

The gang warfare in L.A. Does it hinder your career or affect your business at all?

Well, the gang warfare doesn't affect me but the crime does. Drug dealers sell drugs, buy cars with big speakers, and then buy my records.

So everybody in L.A. with some money is buying your product. I guess in that way you are not affected.

Not at all. And as far as gangs go, there are gangs everywhere. They may not be as popular as L.A. gangs, but there are still gangs everywhere.

So you do admit that the L.A. gangs are a bit more outlandish than the rest of the countries?

Yes. They have money. They go where they want to go. If you mess with them... they will come and get you... no matter where you are.

For a young man growing up in L.A. is it at all possible to stay out and away from the gangs?

Yes. You have a choice. No one is going to force you to be in a gang. Most people join for protection or to make money.

So you got into the record business to avoid that and to make money and talk about sex.

I don't talk about it. I share my experiences.

You write all of your lyrics by the way?

    Everything.

    All from experience?

    Yes.

    Straight from the heart huh?

Not the heart ... a little bit lower.

I don't know what to say. I asked you to be candid, not to hold back. You are definitely not a modest kind of guy. You're no phoney either. I thought it all to be a gimmick to sell records... but you are what you say you are! Do you think you will ever change?

I'll always be me. The only changing I will do is change with the times. I'm in tune with myself!

    That’s important!

So, if they like what I release and things don't change much... when I'm fifty years old, I'll put out "dirty old man" raps. If they like it... they'll buy it!

You like the recording business that much huh?

Yes! I love it! As long as I can get a couple of Benz's per year!

Well, Egyptian Lover it has been a pleasure talking to you. A little exhausting but I'm going to see what song I can play off this album, without losing my license or my job that is.

None of my songs have bad lyrics.

Well, it's not always the lyrics. I had to force my station on KOOL MOE DEES "GO SEE THE DOCTOR" as well as "JIMMY" by KRS 1... so I'm going to give your LP an intense listening, because I really like you as a person! Like I said, I love real people and you are definitely no phoney, so I give you that much respect.Thanks.

On that note I'm going to end this session. It was a pleasure talking with you. I wish you much success and I hope you get more Benz’s next year!!!

    I sure hope so!
