Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

W3C green-lights adding DRM to the Web's standards, says it's OK for your browser to say "I can't let you do that, Dave"Here's the (much) worse news: the decision to go forward with the project of standardizing DRM for the Web came from Tim Berners-Lee himself, who seems to have bought into the lie that Hollywood will abandon the Web and move somewhere else (AOL?) if they don't get to redesign the open Internet to suit their latest profit-maximization scheme.

Pills made from poop cure serious gut infections
Half a million Americans get Clostridium difficile, or C-diff, infections each year, and about 14,000 die. A very potent and pricey antibiotic can kill C-diff but also destroys good bacteria that live in the gut, leaving it more susceptible to future infections. Recently, studies have shown that fecal transplants - giving infected people stool from a healthy donor - can restore that balance.

Turning down 3,000,000,000 is just greedy, tbh.
On a revenue model - they don't actually need one as long as their product could help someone elses revenue model (and Facebook obviously think it would help theirs).0 -

dispatch-proxyYou often find yourself with multiple unused internet connections, be it a 3G/4G mobile subscription or a free wifi hotspot, that your system wont let you use together with your main one.
For example, my residence provides me with a cabled and wireless internet access. Both are capped at 1,200kB/s download/upload speed, but they can simultaneously run at full speed. My mobile internet access also provides me with 400kB/s download/upload speed. Combine all these with dispatch and a threaded download manager and you get a 2,800kB/s download and upload speed limit, which is considerably better

FDA combats antibiotic resistance with plan to curb drug use in livestock
The new FDA guidance asks pharmaceutical companies to relabel some of their antibiotics, allowing them to be used for fighting infections but not for growth purposes. The change is only voluntary though, and it's not clear how many pharmaceutical companies the FDA will be able to get on board with the plan, which may cut into their existing profits.
"The FDA is leveraging the cooperation of the pharmaceutical industry to voluntarily make these changes because we believe this approach is the fastest way to achieve our goal,” FDA deputy commissioner Michael Taylor says in a statement. “Based on our outreach, we have every reason to believe that animal pharmaceutical companies will support us in this effort.”

European Court ruling condemns mass surveillanceThe Advocate General of the European Court of Justice today gave an important opinion in our favour in a case brought by Digital Rights Ireland to challenge European mass surveillance law.
The challenge – which we started in 2006 – is to the Data Retention Directive. This is a law which requires ISPs and telecoms companies to record details of all your internet and telephone use – logging details of who you ring or text, where you travel and who you email – and to record that information for up to two years. We argue that this constitutes an unjustified invasion of the right to privacy and in an interim ruling the Advocate General has agreed, holding that the law is a “particularly serious” interference with individual privacy which creates a:faithful and exhaustive map of a large portion of a person’s conduct strictly forming part of his private life, or even a complete and accurate picture of his private identity. The Advocate General accepted our argument that storing this information on all citizens created an “increased risk” that it could be used for unlawful, fraudulent and malicious purposes against them – something we have already seen in Ireland where a Garda sergeant has abused the system to spy on a former lover and where it has been used to spy on journalists.

Digital rights group: Users face choice of "privacy or security on Android, but not both”Earlier this week, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) – a non-profit organisation campaigning for improved digital rights for users – published an article entitled ‘Awesome Privacy Tools in Android 4.3+’, in which it praised Google for introducing greatly improved and more granular options to give users more control over what data could be accessed and used by apps installed on their devices. In that article, the EFF’s Peter Eckersley wrote:To date, there has been no way to run apps on Android with real and reliable privacy controls. Android version 4.3 and higher take [sic] a huge step in the right direction, letting users install apps while denying some of the apps’ attempts to collect the user’s data.”That praise did not last long. The next day, Eckersley published a follow-up article, noting that Google had removed those ‘App Ops’ tools completely in the latest OS release, Android 4.4.2, which is currently rolling out to its newer Nexus devices.Arnold Schwarzenegger is also back in his signature cyborg role.A newly leaked internal document reveals that the NSA and British intelligence agency GCHQ have developed mass collection capabilities enabling them to monitor the activities and communications of the 48 million Xbox Live console network gamers. Although that sum might seem paltry, it represented more than a third of the revenue that the relevant division at RSA had taken in during the entire previous year, securities filings show.

Google Selling Motorola Phone Business to LenovoGoogle is selling Motorola's smartphone business to Lenovo for $2.9 billion, a price that makes Google's biggest acquisition look like its most expensive mistake.
The deal announced Wednesday will rid Google Inc. of a financial headache that has plagued the Internet company since buying Motorola Mobility for $12.4 billion in 2012. Motorola has lost nearly $2 billion since Google took over, while trimming its workforce from 20,000 to 3,800.Google is retaining most of Motorola's portfolio of mobile patents,

When @N is worth $50,000  what will you buy in the Internet Land Grab??The web is about to have its big bang. About 1,000 new generic top-level domain names, or gTLDs (the last bit of an internet address, such as the com in qz.com) will come into existence this year. On Feb. 4, anybody will be able to create and start running a website on the first of the new domains. The number of alphabets in which you can create a web address will be at least a dozen including Chinese and Arabic. Hundreds of millions of dollars will be made. And our conception of the web will change entirely.

This New Printer Uses Water Instead Of Ink And We Would Like One Immediately PleaseThe chemists approached this dichotomy by creating an all-new printing system, using water in lieu of ink on a special paper that changes color when wet.
Calling this new paper “water-jet rewriteable,” Zhang’s team created it with dyes that are invisible until exposed to moisture; the water opens closed, colorless molecules in the paper, triggering the coloration. And, even better, the paper could be printed on over and over again, since the words are fully eraseable.

Shares in Twitter plummet after user growth slowsShares in microblogging site Twitter fell by 24% after it reported slower growth in user numbers.
Twitter averaged 241 million monthly users in the last quarter of the year, up just 3.8% on the previous quarter.
That represents a slowdown compared with a growth rate of 10% seen at the beginning of 2013.This shouldn't be taken as a recommendation to go out of the way to avoid taking in antioxidants from food. But going out of your way to add lots of extra Vitamin C, Vitamin E, N-acetylcysteine, etc., to your diet? More and more, that really looks like a bad idea.

Would their business model not include shipping to Ireland & Europe? Don't see anything in the article that sheds light on whether they will or not
Not sure. Great if it does but even still I find these companies will ship free to NI as it's part of the UK and charge a whopper to ship to RoI. That's why I find it cheaper still with parcel motel.0 -

Yeah, agreed. It's not for techie books. It would be super for novels though. Makes your phone a useful reading device, too. I already got a speed reading app for my android on the back of it. It's not as good as that Spritz thing, but it's not bad.0

Tried that speed reading app on the train on the way home. It's exhausting. I found it disrupted the flow of speech within the book (i.e. you don't get a chance to fully assimilate speech as speech).
The spritz version is significantly better, tbh. It pauses briefly after commas and full stops.0 -
