1 - Actor or actress who stands out to you on a show for either dragging an otherwise brilliant cast down OR stands out as being so much more talented than the rest of the cast/deserving of a much better show.

2 - Pitch me your idea for a new TV show. Either a vague outline of an idea you had yourself or something you'd adapt, book, film etc. Or a full PowerPoint presentation with storyboards and casting ideas if you've given it that much thought :)

Favorite sci-fi show, well there's so many great ones but Babylon 5 is the one show which truly blew me away. I've no revisited it since it finished airing but plan to soon.

Comedy, well again it's hard to pick just one. Frasier is perhaps the one which I can still revisit and find something new to laugh at each time. It's Always Sunny is a more recent one which has became a favorite.

Started watching the Strain and it really seems as if half the cast are in an entirely different show, Jonathan Hyde and David Bradley are great in their roles and you feel that they deserve a much better show. Any scene they have with any of the leads just shows up how much better the veterans are.

Well I have a TV pitch called The Cumback about a porn star attempting to get his second chance. I'll see if I can find it and post it up

The entire cast is cursed to never do good work again. God, they've all done some terrible shows since. Actually, the guy who played Luke Cafferty has been on Parenthood which is another show I've been meaning to watch for ages. And something about MMA called Kingdom which is supposed to be good. Maybe the curse is starting to break.

Kyle Chandler is currently on Bloodline, a new Netlfix show. You might like it Elmo. It's very character driven. It's still not as fine a piece of work as FNL but it's almost like they picked him because they had a Coach Taylor like role for him.

Shows that promised so much and failed to deliver, well that's a long list. Heroes is one that instantly comes to mind, they had a great set up but squandered it on one of the blandest shows of all time. Lost is another one, I gave up pretty early when it was evident that the writers were making it up as they went along. Most recently The Following has taken an interesting premise and rather than do or say anything interesting resorted to the lowest common denominator gratuitous sex and violence.

I don't really hate watch all that much, well I did watch all of The Walking Dead over the past weeks and found it incredibly frustrating. It's a soap opera with zombies and is 80% poor writing, 10% doing the same things time after time and then you have 10% of actual quality.

If you had the opportunity to talk a few network executives (incl. cable) what would you say to them?

If you had the opportunity to talk a few network executives (incl. cable) what would you say to them?

I think that I'd try to hammer home the point that they need to start giving shows a chance and not cancelling them before they have an opportunity to show what they can do. When you look at a show like Allegiance you can recogise one which had the potential to become something a little special, it had a game cast, decent writing and a set up which lent itself to telling a multi series story but ratings weren't great and as such it was cancelled.

The whole concept of ratings and demographics is a ridiculously outdated system and one which is no longer relevant given how we obtain our TV in this day and age. Longmire, one of the most adult and interesting shows of the past decade did great numbers but sadly they weren't in the coveted 18-whatever age bracket and as such it was cancelled. Thankfully it was picked up by Netflix but the fact that a show which was a network's second most popular averaging just under 6 million viewers a week gets unceremoniously dumped just makes no sense to me. Longmire had better ratings than Mad Men or Justified and one would expect that it be celebrated by it's network and not penalized for appealing to an older audience.

I'd also like to sit down with many of the cable executives and try to hammer home the point that gratuitous sex and violence does not equal adult. Far too many shows airing at the minute stuff their run time with scene after scene of both and most times it comes across as being there simply for the sake of it. And now that I think of it, I'd also like to point out that basing your show around obscene acts of violence against women is not something that appeals to most. Shows such as Criminal Minds are just distasteful and relish in grotesque acts of violence, often sexualised and free from context it's there simply to titillate.

I'm more often surprised by what terrible things family and friends watch. My Dad would have quite similar tastes to myself, he loves Bosch and Longmire and a lot of my friends would be into them too, mostly because I force them to sit down and watch shows like The Wire, Longmire, Bosch, The Red Road, Rectify, etc.

From previous posts, I recall you're a bit of a binge watcher. What's the most number of episodes of any show that you've binged on in order to catch up? I'm wondering if it's 'Supernatural'.
Did you feel the binging was worth it or did it feel like a bit of a slog ?

I think that the most I've binged watched is The Walking Dead, I started series 1 on the 15th of this month and finished episode 15 of series 5 on Sunday past. I also did all 10 episodes of Bosh in a day and raced through The Strain over the past two days. Generally if I'm under the weather I'll find something easy to watch and work through it, I find it helps a lot when I have a migraine to find something like The Strain. I know I won't sleep and I don't want anything too hard to follow so opt for something light. A couple of months back I went through a bad few weeks and binged a lot, watched all of Fringe, Alphas, Awake and The Following over the course of about 2-3 weeks.

I think that binge watching all depends on the show, when I did Supernatural I think that around the mid point of series 5 I took a break and didn't return to it for a few months. It's beneficial for a show like Bosch or The Wire to get through it over a short period of time as these are shows which lend themselves to binging but for something like Elementary or other procedurals spacing them out over a few weeks/months is often easier as the very nature of these shows mean that they can get rather repetitive.

Is there any particular actor/actress who would put you off watching a series if they were in it?

I'd recast the role of Sam in Supernatural, Jared Padalecki really isn't all that charismatic or interesting in the role and always comes across poorly when compared to his.

Depends on severity of migraine, if it's bad then all I can do is hide beneath the covers and beg for death. After the worst has passed I'll not be able to do much beyond stare blankly at a screen so at those times having something easy to stare at helps.

Back as a kid it would properly have been Batman the Animated series, a show which is just as good now as when I was 6.

Robin Williams instantly puts me off watching something, he just annoys me and whenever I saw him on screen I would roll my eyes and hope someone punched him. Same goes for Colm Meaney, James Nesbitt, David Caruso and Mila Kunis who should never be allowed to be the lead in anything.

I tend to not watch brand new shows simply because most of them don't survive long and I hate to get invested and then have the cancellation axe swing. So there is quite a lot this season which I'll wait for renewals.

But If I had to pick one I'd go with The Flash. It's goofy but good fun. More fun than Arrow anyway. I watched both seasons of Black Sails recently which is a newish show and I found it really enjoyable. Season 2 was terrific.
    Mr E wrote: »

Firefly is the obvious answer to this question. Ten years on and it still hurts. :P. But because everyone picks that one, I'll go with Stargate Universe. Underappreciated show in my opinion and it had really hit its stride before the hammer fell. Robert Carlyle was brilliant as Rush.

I'm a big fan of Justified but Erica Tazel who plays Rachel is just awful. She can't act and kills any scene she is in. She's only had about a dozen roles, most of them guest spots in the last 15 years......so clearly I'm not the only one who thinks she's useless. Considering how good the rest of the cast is, I'm amazed they hired her.

Shows like Dexter prove that you can make your protagonist an awful person and still have the audience glued to their screens. Lot's of shows have evil characters but very few make them the centre of the show.

I'd have to think about it more before I fully pitched an idea to you, but I'd like to see more shows take risks with this idea that you don't have to fill you story with good, virtuous people.

Wow, I could pick so many moments. It's a fairly broad question. I'm not an emotional guy.......no book, show or movie has ever made me cry. But when the camera panned back to show John Locke in the wheelchair demanding to go on the walkabout and that iconic music swelled......that one really hit me hard. Similarly later on in season 1 when his father dupes him with the kidney. Yeah that one stayed with me.

Say what you want about Lost's decline and where it ended up, I maintain that the first season of it is incredible television.
    squonk wrote: »

True blood. Here was an opportunity to tell a realistic tale of what it would be like if vampires existed today. And what we ended up with was just garbage to be honest. It started off well, and the quality just drove off a cliff.

    What's your guilty pleasure show?

Veronica Mars. "It's about a young girl who's best friend is murdered and how she finds out who did it." That description alone makes it sound like some awful Nancy Drew show and if somebody pitched that to me, I'd probably roll my eyes.

But its such a well written show. It has good characters with some great dialogue and is much better than it has any right to be. I cant recommend it enough. For such a childish premise, it deals with some very adult themes and does so with more maturity than many more "adult" shows ever could.

Rob Thomas is the guy behind it and he has a brand new show called iZombie which I'm looking forward to watching....assuming it gets picked up for a second season of course. :p
    JP Liz V1 wrote: »

Well Veronica Mars got its movie. So did Firefly. And Stargate got its tv movies. And Entourage has one coming out soon. And Community is guaranteed to get one. It seems every show gets a movie now! :D

I think a Game of Thrones movie would be a mega hit. Everyone seems to watch the show, I'm sure the content is there for a movie and it would make a ton of money. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Who was your first ever TV crush and who's your current TV crush?

Tiffani Thiessen.....Kelly Kapowski from Saved by the Bell. Gorgeous then and gorgeous now. I didn't watch the show religiously or anything, but when I did watch, it was for her.

Picking from current tv shows I'd have to go for Christina Hendricks from Mad Men or for Allison Brie from Community. Or both. :p

What was your favourite show or shows when you were a kid?

Star Trek TNG hooked me early on. I was much too young to appreciate the original series. It just seemed way too goofy and old fashioned like something my dad would watch. The Next Generation however, was newer and sleeker and got its claws into me.

Irish television wasn't what it is today....we were years behind the states but I tried my best to keep up to date with the show. "I am Locutus of borg" is a line that still makes me smile......and even as a kid "The Inner Light" episode really impressed me and made me think. I owe my love of Science fiction to Star trek.

If you mean when I was really young, I was a big fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Donatello was my favourite because even at that age, I was very self aware and knew I was a nerd. Nerds gotta stick together! :)

It's a popular answer, but the Taylors from Friday Night Lights. They were to most realistically portrayed married couple on tv. Enough said.

I actually really liked that Power Rangers spoof that they did recently. Joke or not, I would have watched it!

It could never happen because of who owns the property but a darker, live-action Pokémon could be very interesting. It would have to have a decent chunk of money behind it for the CGI, and we could deal with the issue of forcing animals to kill each other for our pleasure.....and also sending ten year olds out into the world on their own. :p

What your favourite TV Theme Song of All-Time?

When I'm binge watching something I usually skip the intro because it starts the grate a little no matter how good it is. But when I was watching Black Sails recently, I never did. It has a great intro with a great tune so I'd go for that for a current show. Bear McCreary does great music. Most of the Battlestar Galactica sound track is incredible.

For an older show, the TNG intro is up beat and catchy. And it's short enough that it doesn't get on your nerves. I like that.

Not sure about whether to die die die, but the biggest let down for me was CSI Cyber. Just the production of it - was all excited about watching it, since its based on the work of an Irish cyberpsychologist. Lasted ten minutes into the first episode, but have vowed to go back and watch it

Pretty much any villain from either Legend of Aang and Legend of Korra. What I loved about them is that you they weren't bad for the sake of being bad, they had honourable, if skewed, reasons for their actions and you can associate with them easier.

Most disappointing show in recent memory is probably Under the Dome. It just had so much promise and turned into a turd.

Standout show so far is The Flash. It could have been terrible, but it's actually quite enjoyable. Though I'm thinking that the Netflix Daredevil could potentially blow it away.

Or a full PowerPoint presentation with storyboards and casting ideas if you've given it that much thought
