Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Nissan Almera Possible Lamba Oxygen Sensor Issue

    Hoping someone can help
I have a 05 Nissan Almera 1.5 petrol N16 model- on and off over the past few years i have been getting engine light with error code p0171 System Too Lean (Bank 1)- it usually happens after long drives greater than 1.5 hours.
I have taken it to the garage, they had it for a few days and said they could not find anything wrong with it. They did not go into the tests they took.

The car eats petrol, would be lucky to get 10 litres to 100km about 28mpg
I exhaust is very sooty, i got a new exhaust recently and within a month was very sooty again.

I have a feeling it could be the first oxygen/lambda sensor
i took out the MAF chip inspected it visually it looks fine, no dirt on it and wires look ok
I cannot see any leaks in the hoses.
I do not have access or knowledge to do a smoke test

i scanned the voltage on the lambda using a scan tool easy obdII and all i can see is the voltage moving up from 0.00 volts to .9000 volts after the car was driven for 10 mins and even at idle. revs do not seem to have a direct impact to the voltage. I then tried the same tool in another car colt and again seems to jump up and down so not sure what this is telling me

before changing lambda € 100 and/or MAF € 200 interested in anyone's views or thoughts on this- really want to get this resolved once and for all as mpg is killing my wallet, money i do not have to spare

You can't do a smoke test on a petrol anyway.

A proper diagnostic and live data inspection of all systems will show how everything is working, combine this with a gas analyser and a mechanic should be able to see what the problem is.

The B1S1(front) lambda is supposed to switch between approx 0.2v and 0.8v every 1 second roughly at idle when in closed loop running(fully up to temperature).

    thanks Nissan Doctor

i forgot to mention in the original post that that on the last NCT in November the car failed on emissions, two day before the test did a round trip of about 200 km engline light came on.
I reset the engline light, retested 2 weeks later and passed the test no problem at all
Apart from the voltage on the lambda sensor is there anything else i should look out for the disgnostic test that might indicate wha the problem maybe.
the issue seems to be on and off, last time i took the car to the garage they could not find any faults

    apprciate the advice

I know someone with an Almera of the same age...had problems with the Cam Sensor! Replaced at least twice.

The sensor probably isn't the problem so...

i had an almera a couple of years ago and the engine management light came on regularly.
Once it came on was due to the oxygen sensor. Replaced it with an aftermarket sensor - that was a mistake. The car didnt like the aftermarket sensor and i was trying to figure out what could it be. I was getting the codes for the oxygen sensor. Figured it out a week later.
