Can someone still receive Dis. Allowance whilst doing a short stint in prison or do they have to stop it?

You are not entitled to Disability Allowance when in prison - from www.welfare.ie:

People in prison or detained in legal custody are not entitled to payment of Disability Allowance. A person shall not be considered to be detained in legal custody for the purposes of entitlement to disability allowance where she or he is detained for treatment under

an admission order or renewal order under the Mental Health Act 2001, or
an order made under Section 38 of the Health Act 1947, or
an order made under Section 4 or Section 5 of the Criminal Law (Insanity)
an order made under Section 17 of the Lunacy (Ireland) Act 1821, or
an order made under Section 2 of the Trial of Lunatics Act 1883.

More information on imprisonment:
The Department should be notified as soon as detention has taken place in order that an overpayment will not arise.

Upon release, the person should make a fresh application for personal payment or for an increase in respect of the spouse, partner or child as appropriate. This will be processed in the normal manner.
