Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

How do I know if a laptop fan isn't working

Would the CPU temp get too high or could it just get verrry hot?

I have a hp pavillion g6. When I use window media player/use a high usage program like football manager or use chromecast the cpu temp gets very high, to the limit of turning off....like 80 degrees?

At this time the fan is very loud.

The fan to my left is putting out warm air which I would expect. But there is a spot underneath that gets very warm near a vent. Is there any fans on the bottom or just vents?

I also wanted to get compressed air to clean the coils but I couldn't see any in tesco. Anyone know where I could get some?

Might not be the fan. The heatsink may have come slightly loose, so heat isn't being dissipated. Fan going full whack is symptom of this.

Open it up, clean it all out. Make sure heatsink is seated correctly (might need to remove fan). You can get compressed air in any computer shop, just make sure not to hold it upside down (liquid might come out).

Note that some laptops might have a gpu as well, with a heatsink/fan.

Is it difficult to open it up and clean it? I reckon it's clogged up as I tend to eat and generally have dust everywhere.

This is the laptop. And thanks for replying.

Nope it's pretty easy, just get a screwdriver. Beware of static discharge, earth yourself before touching any internal bits.

If it's still under warranty then DO NOT OPEN IT. Just ring support! Note that you have at least 2 years warranty no matter what the seller may claim.

You should be able to do it comfortably in less than 30 minutes, but if you're nervous, you could just sick a decent vacuum cleaner again the fan exhaust vent to suck out excess dust etc.

It's better and more effective to take it to bits though, so have a go if you think you're up to it.

Have a look at this video and see what you think.

Tell it to my old HP

This is how much I had to take it apart to clear out the CPU bunnies

Lol, some of them are utterly ridiculous to take to bits for the simplest of things.

My current one has one memory slot on the bottom and the other is under the keyboard. :(

And I've had several where you can't get to the hdd without taking the whole bottom (or top) off.

Memory, hdd and cleaning fans are about all you can do with almost any laptop, so I've no idea why those 3 things at a minimum aren't made easier to access.

I had a brand new one at the weekend and there are NO panels to access ANYTHING on it at all without taking it to bits. :(
