    Lullaby on Lennox Street

    Livid foetus,
    Slime-gilded in frost;
    I find you at the bottom of Child’s Well.

    Words cannot thaw your
    dreary cheek upon the slab; nor can
    fingers warm that are
    so thin between spare, white thighs.

    But I scrupulously shout
    Oi!
    To be sure you are alive.
    Sit up, you sleepy boy;
    attend your Good Samaritan,
    This is my womb: I come
    bearing water from a tin can.

    Now is the night,
    her dark, vile caruncles;
    Now, and again
    now, and now
    is a policeman’s boot.
    Now, here are our instruments.
    Chrome on bone.

    You must take your afterbirth,
    You must eat our drugs,
    We cannot let you take root!

    I'm not sure if I need to provide context or not. The context is a homeless guy sleeping on the pavement at 2am in Winter. He is not responsive. A passer-by calls the Guards.
