Repeating 5th year? Hoping for Medicine.

    I'm 17 in 5th year now after doing ty and my goal is to study medicine. I have a feeling I won't make the cut first time (I could get close but that's not good enough)
    I'm not sure would repeating 5th year be a good idea or would repeating the LC itself be better.
    Most of the course is covered in 5th year so hence my idea of repeating 5th year rather than lc but then again there is that possibility that I could get straight through or the miss fortune of the exams going tits up..

    Also without sounding like a **** I think that the year who I would be doing 5th year with if I repeat would be better suited as a group because my current year a good few of them really aren't arsed but the up and coming year 2 others who I talk to also plan on studying medicine.

    Any suggestions? Thanks

    Really unnecessary to talk to them like that? If you don't have anything helpful to say ignore the board
    Talk about the issue with the guidance councillor, in my opinion I think it would be better to go ahead into 6th year and see how the exams go in case you get lucky, and then you can just repeat 6th year if you need to

    Why are you treating him like this guys, leave him alone. I'd advise go through the course to Leaving cert then if you need to repeat at least it's only revision and you don't need to learn new material

    Part of its understandable but the reason I do not ask my guidance councillor is because he is only in 2 days a week for 2 classes worth, we do not have class with him, he is useless, the one piece of advice you will be given by leaving certs in my school is 'don't mind that lad he's only here because was principal 20 years ago, the mans lost a few nuts and bolts over the years'

    Becuase he asked if he should repeat 5th year. It's not the smartest thing in the world. If he wants to get into Medicine he should put his head down now and if he doesn't do well in the LC or HPAT he can always repeat the Leaving Cert. That's a way better choice to make than repeating 5th year. There is no point in repeating 5th year.

    I totally agree with you on this one, he also has a lot of other threads related to this topic and theres already alot of advice in them but instead he persists of asking the same question over and over again:confused: it kinda gets annoying !

    The thing is, you have to view this in a realistic approach.

    What will you gain from 'doing' another year in the LC course? You say you want to to do medicine, yet you say there's a chance you won't make it on your first try. Medicine is a very hard area despite what college you decide to study at. I've heard the exams are very competitive and much harder than the LC(the direct medicine routes). Will you repeat a year in college because you're afraid you won't pass your exams? If you're there thinking you won't be able to achieve WHAT YOU WANT in a two year LC course, what says the same won't happen with a SEVEN YEAR MEDICINE COURSE?

    Also, I really hate the way people think you need 550+ points + hpat to do medicine. It really annoys me. I'm doing some research for my courses at the moment, and you could get into medicine by doing Science TCD(510 Points), and specialising in a few areas such as Molecular Medicine, Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Immunology etc. Sure, it's going to be competitive to enter them areas in year three as there are limited places - but it offers a road to medicine. It really depends on your interests. You could do medical research, or on the field medicine (practitioner I suppose.)

    Saying you want to get into medicine is like saying you want to get into science or teaching. It's very vague, which means you could eat different pieces of the pie at different stages.

    Some people do 'main stream medicine' because they think they're too good and wasting talent if they do anything of a lesser degree.

    The only thing I'll add though, if you want to become a surgical operator, unfortunately I think you have to head down the mainstream medicine route (high points + hpat).

    I'm not aware of any other routes, but do some research on how to obtain a surgeon licence or what ever it is.

    Surgeon = medicine , internship (medical + surgical ) , then jd , residency. It will take you quite a long time .

    Just work on getting high points and a good hpat for now .

    It's very early to be making that decision man, it's not even passed Christmas, start now :) make the choice to repeat after the lc

    I'm in leaving cert at the moment but I repeated fifth year last year. I wasn't happy with my subject choices and I didn't do Ty and I felt I needed an extra year in school. Personally I feel that it was good for me because I wasn't repeating for the academics but academically I would definitely say repeat the leaving cert, repeating fifth years not going to really change your marks and it's just a waste of a year. Coming from somebody whose repeated fifth year I'd say repeat the leaving cert

    I wouldn't recommend repeating 5th year from my experience. I have mates repeating either the leaving cert or the hpat. From what they've told me theres options doing medicine in eastern europe

    I am currently doing the leaving cert for the second time to get into Veterinary. There is a much greater advantage in doing 6th year again than doing 5th again. If you don't get in the first time doing 6th, you'll still have the experience of doing the HPAT and that would be a good advantage. Also you'll know the structure of everything and how everything is done the second time too.
