Halfords is coming to Galway.
A new store will be opening in Headford Road retail park.
I am looking forward to it.

That's the Galway Retail Park.

Galway Shopping Centre is on the other side of the road.

Don't know of any area called Headford Rd Retail Park, go I'd guess it's the Galway RP they're referring to.

Job ads on the FAS website, BTW.

Halfords is a bit 'meh' in my opinion, but if it brings some employment then that's great.

Good to see new jobs in the wesht.

Halfords are OK....By that I mean the stuff they stock (bikes and car accessories) are needed locally and they do run discounts regularly...

In general though the markup is steep(but this applies to most stores where the price is directly proportional to the overheads)

...keep an eye on their bargain alerts.:)

I know the unit under the Marriott is being fitted out but I thought it was for a furniture place moving from across town.

Maybe where chartbusters used to be?

I'd say the Marriott is exactly where their store will be and not the Galway Retail Park.

There Carrera and Boardman range are top value for money and hopefully it'll encourage the local shops to be more competetive.

Agree, however I think their accessories are a rip (unless on sale). It's tempting and easy to buy a bike and accessories together, you'll get better value if you buy the accessories on-line. Also I'd advise against really cheap bikes in Halfords or anywhere else. Its a false economy, you have loads of technical problems, will have to replace parts etc. you'll grow to hate rather than love your bike. Stick to Carrera and Boardman and you'll get value. GT aren't bad as far as I know. I'd steer clear of Raleigh(they're not what they once were).

The new store will be base don the headford road in the same retail park as Woodies and Aldi, and will occupy the old chart/blockbusters store.

The store is due to open in December of this year.

Afraid not on the first picks for the jobs.

Everyone has an opportunity to apply for a position in the new store which is currently being advertised on FAS with applications available from the Galway FAS offices.

And yes, i am doing the recruitment and store opening for the new store.

Their prices look pretty good but having said that i would pay the extra to support a small locally run bike shop business rather than supporting a huge UK and interntuonal chain like halfords.

That's not to say I wouldn't use them for car stuff, because there doesn't seem to be anywhere else stocking car accessories.

I assume you're clued into the bike scheme if you're buyin one? Well worthwhile by the looks of things.

Um there is a car accesories shop across the road at the galway shopping centre.

I sincerely hope another UK chain won't be able to muscle local shops out.

I use them all the time. Got all the stuff for my own and my missus cars last service off them. Excellent service, next day delivery and no hassle with returning parts if you order incorrectly.

Highly recommend them

Fair enough.

But you try being female and going into one of the existing motor factors around Galway. All you get is an ignorant, disinterested, chauvinistic attitude that is, for the most part, nothing short of neanderthal; they make it very clear, even if you do know what you're talking about, that this is a mans domain and you as a woman are unwelcome. And if they're not chauvinistic, they are patronizing(yes thank you, I do know that the 'little numbers' on the outside of a tyre indicate it's size; moron). It's the same in the majority of local builders providers also, apart from McDonaghs.

So I'm welcoming Halfords, it means I can go buy my oil and my antifreeze and my bulbs and my wiper blades and all the other little bits our cars might need without having to grovel for it, or endure prehistoric 'cars aren't for women' attitudes.

MR - I see where you're coming from.

The thing I hate about motor factors in this part of the country (or world) is that everything is behind the shelf.

When i'm looking for a part I know EXACTLY what i'm looking for, unlike the chap behind the desk. I'm sick of the amount of times I need to send back an item (while i'm at the desk) or go behind the desk to pick out exactly what I need.

At least when you order online you nearly always get what you wanted as its the exact part number.

Halfords will be a welcome by me. I prob won't buy much (unless i'm stuck) but its nice to be able to go in and pick up the basic things (filters etc.) yourself rather than having to have someone get them for you (I think sometimes people forget that its their job to do this in Motor Factors)

They probably won't hinder any local motor factors as their prices are guaranteed to be higher (Halfords) and I can't see much 'trade' accounts being used

Believe me, your experiences would be no better as a bloke. Unless you're actually 'in the industry' you get the same patronising responses, gender aside.

A while back I was looking for a particular item, and because I used a term slightly different from that known to the bloke behind the counter, I got "a what?!?" as my response, accompanied by the sort of look you might give to a dog**** stuck to your shoe.
Needless to say, he didn't get my business, and never will.

You should try the Carparts warehouse in Liosban. The staff there are great and don't make you feel like an idiot. Prices and range of stuff are good too.

At least all the Halfords products will have price stickers on them. I hate it it when nothing is priced & you have to ask - you end up wondering if you have been charged the same as others.

Halfords is a rip-off across the board, theres nothing in there you wont find cheaper somewhere else in town, will keep an eye on it for deals but apart from that their prices are a joke in their Irish branches.
