Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    Toshiba i5 works out at about 480 including delivery and currency charges,
    but again like with the hp you have to go through the cashback nonsense
    ( not even sure cashback is available in ireland with the hp but think it is with the toshiba )
    so i would go for the dell which also has a slightly faster i5

    Or a better Toshiba in Powercity for €545 which is similar in spec to the Dell - no cashback nonsense and no waiting for it from Dell and probably the best option for supporting Irish jobs..

    Of course. Point taken. I am just hoping that people look around locally first - I think we have a mindset now to go straight to foreign sites. Sometimes it can be as cheap here or the extra can be worth it for a few reasons...service, patriotism :) ,immediate receipt of goods. If 20%of us even did this it would make a difference.

    Apologies, James posted the same Dell deal on a thread I had started looking for a laptop for my Mom, and I somehow ended up posting in this thread although I did not use search and have no idea how I got here in the first place! :)

    i5 has turboboost, meaning it clocks at a higher speed when demanding processes are in operation. i3 won't do that at all.

    Also the difference between OP's bargain and everything else posted is that the first laptop features a dedicated graphics card in it, which is sufficient for entry level gaming and some picture/video editing.

    The laptop has switchable graphics settings with the flick of 2 buttons. If you don't want the dedicated graphics for everyday simple tasks then it can be disabled. Battery life is hence extended. :D Best of both worlds, which makes it even better value!

    It also comes with USB 3.0 ports for next gen USB keys.

    i would agree with all that's been said about the dedicated graphics card but from my experience fixing laptops and pc's the hp is the one that i see most often with problems , personally i would hold out for a toshiba or a lenovo if you want something built to last, just saying....:rolleyes:

    Sorry but Lenovo are up there with some of the worst and most unreliable pieces of crap on the market.

    Toshiba's, on the other hand, are quite reliable from experience.

    just because it has a dedicated graphics card does not make it the best laptop in the thread. very few people actually need a dedicated graphics card, so buying it for that reason would be a waste of money for most people

    this is the bargain alerts forum and the op actually states that the hp is " probably the cheapest i5 from a good Laptop maker ".
    i pointed out that its not the cheapest

    also i am not even sure if the casback is available to irish customers so that laptop is 517 sterling plus a delivery charge

    if the dell is available for 479 then i think that that is an unbeatable price for a 2nd gen i5

    Fair enough- many people may not benefit from a dedicated graphics card- but if you want to play games at all- a dedicated graphics card wins hands down......

    I do a lot of laptop repairs as well- and you do seem to encounter the same issues in particular ranges again and again........

    I'm not going to go into detail (as it would probably be libellous)- lets put it this way- a good warranty is well worth getting- irrespective of who the manufacturer is.

    Acer seem to be getting bad press in the above survey- on the other hand- I'm typing this on a 4 year old 8930G thats going strong- the only thing thats wrong with it is a missing letter 'z' on the keyboard, compliments of my teething son.........

    Agreeing with smccarrick on this.

    As the saying goes, "I'd rather be looking at it, than for it".

    Buying a laptop with integrated graphics means you're stuck with it, there's no upgrading here and you just have to live with it.

    That's fine if you have no video editing/games purposes, however.

    The dedicated graphics card will make a huge difference for video editing/games... however, the only downside is, you're stuck with a HP over a Dell. :P

    And Dell's warranty is very good.

    The promotion is open to residents of Ireland. The cashback is €120. So all that need be checked is whether HP Cashback Ireland have a problem processing the claim for a laptop purchased in UK. And it is the same company doing the cashback so I can't see why they would have a problem.

    I think that's just for trading in your old laptop for €175 (good deal too!) as opposed to cashback.

    Most new laptops don't have VGA out- and indeed most new computer monitors don't include a VGA input......? What point are you trying to make? VGA is old school.

    because most places I go to give presentations are vga only for the projector so if the laptops have mini displayport etc, you need adaptors.
    Now, thats not an issue for you or me but I know from work that people bring in their brand new laptops and don't understand why there is no simple vga on it.

    I would not touch a HP laptop with a barge pole. Bought three machines for friends through a so called friend who works for a HP preferred partner on the Richmond road, who shall remain nameless;).Two died within three months of the warranty expiration. Two machines out of three makes it a 66.6% failure rate after fifteen months out of the box.
