It would be absolutely outrageous if McCarthy misses out in the squad. It was be unbelievably outrageous if Paul Green was in and he wasn't.

I think it'd be outrageous if either went. The former because of his questionable attitude during this campaign and the latter because he's basically just rubbish and offers nothing to the squad at this point in time.

Why hasn't anyone mentioned Lawrence ?

Lawrence is totally out of favor at the moment which is strange considering that he was once shaping up to be a stalwart of the Trap set up, albeit a perennial sub/backup. I'd prefer him slightly over Hunt.

Good first half for Hoolahan, maybe too late to change Trap's mind

I'd prefer him over Hunt too. If we have Mc Clean coming along, Hunt isn't as important, and correct me if I'm wrong, he hasn't been getting his game for Wolves at all, which is not good considering, well it's Wolves.

I think once Andrews and Whelan demonstrated they could cause damage with indirect freekicks then Lawrence pretty much became surplus to requirements.

Can McCarthy's attitude be faulted? He turns up consistently (after a previous misunderstanding) and seems to be the one player who never gets a run, despite Trap constantly saying that he will give him a run. If I were McCarthy, I would be extremely disillusioned.

Maybe people are hoping he'll be forgotten about. Most people want McClean in the squad.

I don't think that Lawrence's only value was as a free kick specialist though. Both him and Hunt are fairly handy on the free kicks but I just think that as a choice for second winger, Lawrence offered a bit more skill on the ball, Hunt - more enthusiasm but Lawrence had enthusiasm himself and put in a lot of graft when he played, probably because he knew he was really fighting for his place.

Tony Leen, the sports editor for the Irish Examiner, tweeted this tonight:
One Republic of Ireland player will dominate tmrws Euro 2012 squad announcement: the one who has to pull out for 'personal reasons' Sad.

Must say having watched duff and kelly in the last few weeks they are both in fantastic form, which is great for us. However I don't think Trap will leave Kelly push as far forward as he does at Fulham.

Madness that he won't make it. Hes probably our best option at left back and covers two other positions very well too.

He's not comfortable at left back at all. I really like him as a centre mid, even though he's naturally a centre back.

Normally I would have thought so too, but I think Cox has leap frogged over those ahead of him (strange considering his position at WB)

We do know that Trap doesnt always pick the best players but those who he likes of fits in his system

    Cox does both

Cox always plays well for us. I'd have him in.

Are all teams releasing their squads today or is there still time to the deadline?

Deadline is the 29th may or something. I'd imagine most will release squads this week though. Even though, I know England are releasing theirs next Monday

Stephen Hunt has said the player pulling out for personal reason isn't him. Aiden McGeady's father has said it isn't him. Sean St. Ledger has suggested it is a midfielder.

By process of elimination we're getting there :D

Ah no all will be revealed by 1530 GMT. It would seem that there are only 3 places in any way up for grabs (without factoring in the player pulling out). I'd assume that these will go to the versatile Kevin Foley, James McCarthy and Keith Fahey. Think McClean's only hope is that the player pulling out is a midfielder or else that Fahey's groin injury will count against him

    Kevin Doyle or Shane Long?

Eh, St. Ledger stating that it's a midfielder rules these two out.

Would have been unimaginable for Stephen Hunt to be the one not going. Doubt there's a personal crisis serious enough to keep him away.

If it's Duff I'll be genuinely sad for him. Been a fantastic servant for Ireland over the last 10 years or so, probably his last chance to go to a major international tournament.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

this should never have developed into the story that it is, its now going to overshadow the squad announcement today.

i think fahey/green, coleman, o dea and mcshane will be the 4 lads name in reserve and trap will pick 3 keepers, 7 defenders, 4 wingers, 4 cms, 5 strikers.

    3 keepers pick themselves.
7 defenders will be kelly, foley, dunne, o shea, Sledge, o dea, ward
4 wingers - mcclane, mcgeedy, hunt, mccarthy
    4 cm - gibson, andrews,whelan,

the 5 strikers will be cox, walters, keane, doyle long

that leaves one space and i think its a direct shootout between green and fahey. logic suggest fahey will get that place, but i have a very bad hunch that green will get it :(

Just curious can anyone think of a single logical reason why Green should be in the squad? I just can't.

Because his second name is green, the jersey is green, green is associated with ireland therefore hes in the squad.

He looks a bit like Paul McShane. That's about the best reason that I can think of.

I don't understand the fixation with Paul Green. The only reason he got called up for the squad in the last friendly was because Gibson was injured.

Could not agree with you more homer, the FAI should have just announced it when the news came to light instead of allowing it to build itself into a huge drama.

Beats me, but I think he will be there.

Seems odd that a pretty bog standard performer for Derby will be on the plane while two regulars who helped get Reading promoted haven't a sniff let alone premiership regulars like Wilson and Hoolahan.

By that logic Stephen Ireland will be in the squad too lol

Or is he the senior player who is out for personal reasons , ie he is mental

    what you mean?

there is a change, no matter how small it is, that he will be in the squad today. people are talkign about him, as nobody thinks that he deserves to be even in contention.

hopefully he wont, but until its announced, people will be worried about it! its him v fahey directly IMO though i would say they are different players.

Anyone think the player who can't make it is just a red herring.

I'd say Trap is just having a laugh, probably going to announce that Andy Reid, Stephen Ireland and Caleb Folan can't make for personal reasons.

This appears to be going on the assumption Duff won't make it. If he does who misses out?

I agree, I actually have a terrible feeling Green will make it and I have an even worse feeling McClean will miss out if everyone is available. Think it's either Green or McCarthy, and Fahey will make it imo
