Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Entry Level Road Bike

    Hi,

Looking some advice on getting an entry level road bike, just needed for keeping fit and recreation basically, probably doing 100k - 150k a week or the odd touring ride when on a break, kerry, wicklow, connemara that kind of thing. Had a lend of a friends road bike for a few months (a 2010 Trek 1.1). Think it was a little small for me but got me hooked on getting out on the road so looking to get my own now. My budget is pretty small though so really looking to keep it under €400. Realise I probably won't get an awful lot for that so really my priority is something reliable that will be relatively hassle free and get me up the odd incline!

Have read a lot of similar threads and often concensus seems to be to look at second hand but would prefer to get something new if possible.

Been having a look online, any thoughts on these bikes? (New poster so can't post the links)

Halfords are advertising a 2015 Carrera Zelos for €375 or a Carrera Karkinos for €399 (originally €799 according to the offer on the site). I know Halfords bike building skills have been questioned but general opinion on here seems to be that Carrera's are decent enough for the money? Does the Karkinos look significantly better that the Zelos?

Justcycles.ie have a Claud Butler San Remo 16 speed for €411 but the Claud Butlers seem to get relatively mixed reviews.

Open to any suggestions or to what I should be looking for if I was to go second hand.

    Thanks!

Have you the option of availing of a Bike to Work scheme ? You could get a decent road bike for half price if you can.

Also worth checking for second hand on adverts.ie and other sites:

Afraid not, self (un!)employed and don't qualify which is a major pain.

I had the carerra tdf from halfords 2 years ago as an
entry level bike, couldn't fault it apart from being a bit on the heavy side, 13kg, but cycling a bike of that weight for a year was a great advantage when I got a 9kg bike a year later. The price at the time was €429 but they were later reduced to €310 or so, great value at that price. Halfords do assemble but I doubled checked everything myself when I got home. If you want a new bike for that kind of money, you could do worse than carerra. Good luck anyway.
