Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Some private trackers are getting hit quite a lot with DDOS attacks. Have you tested with other trackers?

Speeds seem to be improving today maybe it was a temporary glitch. I'm sure if upc were shaping traffic there would be widespread coverage here.

I'm looking for some help speeding up my torrents. I'm on 7mb eircom, using a netopia router and on my laptop I generally use the wireless connection.

Since my upgrade to 7mb broadband (from 3mb) I've seen an increase to 400kb/s download, maximum, but it's not always that high.

Is there any way to improve this without changing provider?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,157 ✭✭✭srsly78

First do a speedtest and see what your actual speed is. Do this test via cable not via wifi first. Then do it via wifi to see if that is causing slowdown.

400KB/s is 3.2Mbps, about half your connection. As you're on a 7Mb package now you're probably on a rural exchange. Try download a *well* seeded torrent at 3AM. Should go up to almost 700KB/s.

Looks at torrent downloading at 9 Megabytes per second.......Looks at UPC modem.....start humming to myself...."Never gonna give you up, Never gonna let you down, Never gonna turn around and desert you!!"

TPB has been back up since the end of Jan. On the old .se domain and all, yet Eircom are blocking it no more, seemingly. Weird, that.

There is quite a bit of speculation that the site is a honeypot engineered to snare us into giving them our IPs and download record.

There is quite a bit of speculation that the site is a honeypot engineered to snare us into giving them our IPs and download record.

Rumour of that has been going around. Frankly, it's rather bullshít as what are they gonna do to us about our downloading record? Nothing. There's no law that states that we can be arrested for illegally downloading movies on the torrenting websites.

It is illegal to pirate stuff so that's a different case all together but LE are wasting their time running TPB imo

I don't think there's much they can do about an Irish user pirating really.

Anyone else on UPC having lots of issues with crashes in uTorrent since the last speed update?

Can't seem to sort it. Whenever the speed reaches 25MB/s the memory usage starts to skyrocket until it reaches the limit at 1800MB, then uTorrent crashes. It doesn't happen when I download to an SSD, only when I am downloading to a HDD. If I set the disk cache to default, then it says 'Disk Overloaded 100%' and the speed drops to zero. Is there another torrent program where this isn't an issue?

Many people stopped using utorrent when they put ads into it, it's basically malware now tbh. I use a client called transmission, there are many to choose from.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,677 ✭✭✭DeepBlue

Transmission used to be mainly for Mac OSX and Linux. Is there a Windows version that works well?

Deluge is an alternative to uTorrent that should work ok. It's available for Windows, Mac and Linux.

I came across a tip one time to stop the ads, deep in the settings.

I haven't noticed any malware yet,
But i have noticed the RSS feeds some have stopped for some reason & when you d/load them, it stalls until you restart it a few times:(

The only thing I have in my uTorrent is an ad at the top and an ad in the bottom left corner. It never bothered me so I never changed. I also have about 2TB of torrent files that I'd have to move over and I was too lazy :o

But I've just come across this on reddit and I'm making the change tonight.

The general consensus is to use uTorrent 2.2.1.

You would want to be careful with newer versions as they bundle in Conduit PUP

I haven't been on here/boards for as often as i like, & never got around to getting that 2.2.1. version, as it's slowing/freezing the laptop down & have to restart it

Btw: if i can ask here, if possible, but what has happened to kickassunblock? it's taken a long time to load or is under attack?

    Thanks.

Btw: i forgot to ask, if you install 2.2.1. over existing, will it overwrite/delete any settings?

    Thanks.

I dumped utrorent a while back. Moved to deluge.

HAve it running on my HTPC as a daemon service. It's lightweight and works well, and definitely more stable that utorrent. utorrent started to get heavy in terms of resource use and as mentioned previously started to pack malware into its latest releases.

Personally won't be going back to it.

Although I've migrated to mostly newsgroups the last two years.

I just checked my version,it's 2.02.I refuse to update it but I might try deluge as Doc recommended.

Did i get it right - every provider throttles torent downloads, particularly on speedy connections ? Been with sky upto 24mb/ real speed for speedtest was about 8, had about 5-6 mb speed for torrents. Moved house and got virginmedia, speedtest 230 vired, torrents not moving at all, tried 2 programs - deluge and utorrent. Only 200 kb using vpn client. What's the story here ?

I got the new Virgin Media hub with 360/36 the other day, and I'm fairy certain they're throttling torrents.

I previously had the technicolour modem/router with 120/12, and had no problems. While it didn't always happen, I did see speeds of 14.1 MB/s down, and 1.3 MB/s up. Not always, but never far off.

The download speed with the VM hub is not too bad on a well seeded torrent. It'll hit 15 MB/s down, but it's usually between 4 and 7.
The upload speed is where the real problem exists. It's struggling to hit 80 KB/s. That's Eircom DSL upload speed.

Note that I'm connected through a Cat 6 cable.
    Anyone else experience this?

Tenner says you're not connectable so you're only seeding to a tiny minority.

sorry if this question has been asked but after 107 pages cant really check all ...

i use utorrent and a privite site -TL. Im not overly savy with the settings and set up as it was sorted for me by someone else and so not sure where to check the following.
I would like to seed up more but have noticed in utorrent that I dont appear to be sharing up unless I am downloading at the same time so I asume my PC is closing the door so to speak when not downloading and doesnt allow uploading .

Anyone got a suggestion on what to check

    thanks

    Check that you are 'connectable'.

Find out which port uT is using and go to canyouseeme.org to find out if that port is open.

My service was disconnected by my ISP without warning following one complaint by a big media company.

I signed up to PIA VPN and ran all the test torrents / IP / DNS Leak tests and I reckon that I'm good go.

    However .....

I'm still very wary of resuming torrents.
I'd love someone out there to monitor a torrent while I'm downloading it and check my visible IP.

This would would any torrent of your choosing.
A torrent with a small number of leechers would be best.

Pmail if you're willing to help. Thanks

You can test if they are HERE:

Looks like this could be useful.
I suspect that Vodafone are shaping my video streaming services, netflix etc.
strange how it only started to happen after declining their offer of their Vodafone TV package a few weeks ago.

Their must be some broken agreements/law if they are doing so surely?

Must say that problems only occur around 4pm until next morning.

They arent shaping, it just busy transit. Think of it like this: A busy motorway vs the police shutting down a lane.
