Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Having operated there many times and continue to do so, I note continuously that there is no begrudging in a lot of things.

For example, I started up a business here in Ireland, its headquarters being in my home town - I being loyal to the place I was born in.
Instead of even an acknowledgement that I was creating employment opportunities for locals, all I got was "who does he think he is?"/"does he think he is something special to be doing his own thing?"/"How is it he can do it and we can't"/"He must be paying someone under the counter, to be able to do what he is doing" and so on.
The amount of begrudging and back-stabbing received back immediately (and that was just what I thought was good close family and friends) was unreal!

When I got to the states and continued on in my specialised field, it was like a complete world had changed, a total wipe clean of attitude and wonderful to experience.
They were appreciative of what I was doing, acknowledged that I was taking a chance and bended over in any way to help, acknowledged that I was bring work to them and not once - ever - was I "knocked" for my efforts at trying to be successful.

Returning back to Ireland each time, is like returning back to the dark ages with the stupid, banal, moronic attitude change that comes with dealing with those with still backward chips on their shoulders and still moaning about "well if I was him I wouldn't have done this/that/the other..."

Folk can knock America for many reasons but their attitude to respecting those that are willing to work hard, is breath of fresh air that we should be importing by the air-spray can load.

How about the Celtic Tiger ?

You can thank American investment (due to the cheap corporate tax)on that more than anything else.

Let's us also mention the fact that USA has been absorbing (a large section) the population overflow of Ireland for the better part of the last 160 years.

By the way ....this is the 'appreciation thread', your comments should be directed to the 'Americans' thread with the daft beauty queen video.

It has nothing to do with being dependent on america.. Clinton passed a law in like 93? that forced banks to give out loans... 80% of these people never even made the first repayment and they was nothing the bank could do about it so they sold these loans to othe banks in oither countries.( talking 100's of billions)..

Not talking about WW2.. America did what they had to

You bought up wars, you can't pick and choose events to suit you.

    And source for that law?

I love america!! Food, TV(except the stupid amount of ad breaks they have), accents, basketball and music.

The Canadians in my college class are ridiculously smart.

Are they smart to figure out that Canada isn't in the US?

This thread is about the good things of America.
If you want to "knock" America (and "knocking" is what we are apparently good at!), can it be taken to the other thread instead of trolling here please!
Is one thread not good enough for the "knockers?"

Canada is a part of North American. The thread title is "American Appreciation Thread", so perfectly valid to bring up Canada in context of this thread.

 I was orignally only talking about certain wars. Ie war that was pointless or had some finanical/political gain for america.... Just like im not saying america is the cause of every single problem in the world

Then we're part of the British Isles, so.

Maybe a Canadian boardsie could let us know how American they feel?

Anyway, I was mostly joking with the reply, as what the poster said was technically accurate.

Post "The Irish are so friendly" in a Nice Things About The English thread, and then claim that it's all the British isles. See how it goes down.

Or do you just absolve your own country from pedantic dissections of other people's jokes?

On topic: America (and most Americans) has nothing to prove to snide Europeans. It's a incredibly diverse place that has given a lot to the world, despite the criticism it invites (deserves) for its role in world politics.

EDIT: fair enough - saw your 'joke' comment.

If it was a nice things about the British Isle thread, you would have a fair comparison to this thread. As it stands, your comparison is hardly an accurate one.

Well, your comparison above isn't even technically accurate, where as mine was.

Been to America 9 times and I've never had anything but pleasant experiences with the people. They're friendly, talkative, and very helpful. Even this Texan girl who believed me when I told her about the bombings in Dublin and difficulty in finding leprechauns was so friendly and interested that I couldn't keep up the pretense. In fact, the only unpleasant times I've had in the US were caused by the Irish people I was traveling with.

Yeah there's a couple of complete ghost towns around some places whereby with the new motorway, a lot business' have had to close. There are a few places where you have to use the motorway as the route stops and picks up a bit ahead. Still lots to see though and definitely worth it. Lot of history.

And that's another thing, with such a young country America has some great albeit, coloured history.

    Where did you grow up?

Walking down the road with 3 other burly lads and a sofa on our shoulders. About 10 people asked could they help us (WTF?)

I love Americans in fact I love America. I've always found them a really friendly and welcoming bunch... Well the ones I know personally anyway.
I've been to the States many a time and I lived there for a few years, in Chicago and NY to be exact and I had a ball. Some of my closest mates are the people I met during my time there. I spent a month touring the west coast in 07 and adored the place, am dying to go back. I've spent the last 8 years drunkenly wittering on about "how, if it kills me, I'm going to go back and make a life for myself in the U.S."

Sure, the U.S. has it's downsides - which country hasn't.. but I'd move back and live there happily in a flash if I could (preferably California!).
I love their 'pat on the back/well done/go for it/you can do it' attitude when you do something you are proud of or achieved something/tried to do something to make a difference to/better your life.
I found this in sharp contrast to the begrudging, tiresome: 'who the hell does she think she is with her fancy payrise and promotion' I'd often come across in Ireland...
Of course there are a fair few nutters in the U.S.A. and a fair whack of ignorant, insular types but in fairness I'd think I'd rather come across one of those down a dark alley any night as opposed to a pure blood Dublin "what's up Bud - you lookin' at me - I'll BURST ya!" scumbag knacker...

You're friendly until the US National Anthem is played before playoff games :p lol

I have an extreme dislike the Habs and Leafs (Leaves) but being from Chicago what would you expect ? At least you're not the Red Wings. :D lol

Although I do cheer like hell for Team Canada when they are not playing the USA at the World Juniors. My second favorite tournament of the year behind the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

    Will do.

Can't bloody stand being called American, and saying "oh well you're included because you're in North America" is a crap excuse, everyone knows that when one says American you full well mean from the United States.

I hate it when Canada is classed as being the "same thing" as the US. It ISN'T! It's not even remotely the same. It's a far better country, in my opinion-- and I can say that having spent a significant amount of time living in both countries. It is completely underrated and it bothers me.

More people need to learn about Canada and stop thinking it's all about the States. Infuriating!

    /end rant.

(and yes, the quebecois are a bunch of french bástards. we give them so much, and they can't even be bothered putting english on their signs, despite the rest of the country having french on everything.. let them separate, see if anyone cares!)

I fn hate the Maple Leaves also...bunch of ****!!!!!

Went to a Bruins V Leaves game this year and when the Leaves scored to make it Bruins 4 Leaves 2, the scumbag leaves palyers started celebrating even tho the game was practically over. Cue the crowd chanting U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A! at those gammy canadians. Me and my buddies tru in a few 'Fcuking Wanker" chants and hand gestures at the players. Hockey games are a great laugh to go to, especially after a few beers!!!

Someone explain this Qubec thing to me. Are they french people who are clinging on to the 18th century?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,750 ✭✭✭liah

It's a province in Canada that is predominately French, it includes the city of Montreal which I'm sure you've heard of as it's one of the larger, more known cities in the country.

Basically, the reason why I (and quite a few other Canadians) can't stand the Quebecois is partially because of the Separatists. The Separatists have a campaign to try and make Quebec into its own country, inside of Canada.

They're quite arrogant, as a rule, just very full of themselves and closed off-- quite like the French of France. You try speaking English to them and they won't respond til you speak in French (though in Montreal it's not so bad because it's such a tourist hotspot; it's mainly the smaller cities and towns.)

Road signs, store signs, etc. in Quebec are all seulement (only) en Francais, whereas in the entirety of the country outside of Quebec the signs are in English and French (exactly how signs in Ireland are both English and Irish).

They don't cater to the rest of the country at all, despite us looking out for them, and are just very stand-offish and unwelcoming.

Maybe it's just something to do with the language itself, as I've heard French from a lot of the rest of the world tend to be quite full of themselves.

    Either way, not a fan...
