What's in those yellow boxes on the m50 slip roads?

    Hi folks,
    Noticed these a while ago, there's a yellow plastic box at the m1 junction where joins the m50 and at the n7 exit. Our of curiosity does anyone know what's in them or their purpose?

    They went out and bought loads when we had that bad winter 2010-2011

    In the city they put out yellow big bins same as waste bins just yellow but they end up with the tops ripped off and full of rubbish.

    These bins have been in place up north and across the water for many many years.

    Mainly salt would be placed inside but doubt they are looked after.

    They are not that big though. You'd hardly fit that much into them I'd say they about three foot wide, two foot deep and maybe two foot high

    Just enough to throw down to get your wheels moving without skidding on the ice as it's very difficult to take of still or on a hill.

    Look up road side salt box on google it won't let me link for some reason.
