JOBS BOOST EXPECTED FOR LIMERICK

A jobs announcement for Limerick is expected to be made this afternoon.

Minster for Finance Michael Noonan and Minister for Jobs Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton are expected to make the announcement along with the President and CEO of Analog Devices.

Analog, which is based at the Raheen business Park, was set up in Limerick in 1977 and employs over 1,000 people in manufacturing and design.

Last year the US electronics firm announced an investment of 23 million euro in R&D at the Limerick plant.

Today's announcement was described by a spokesperson as significant.

Fingers crossed that a significant number of jobs get announced and not the something like the 50/75/100 potential jobs over two or three years line that often gets trotted out in job announcements for Limerick.

With over 22,000 people unemployed in Limerick and with something like 13,000 of those being within the city limits, Limerick needs to start getting announcements of large numbers of new jobs that will have pretty quick starts.

Analog Devices is to announce a big investment in its Limerick plant, which will see it expand its workforce by 100 over the next five years.

The company has been in business in Limerick for the past 30 years and currently employs 1,000 people at the plant.
It is one of the global leaders in the development of semiconductors for the technology industries.
The jobs that will come as a result of the expansion are at the high end, stretching its research and development capabilities and consolidating its business operations in Ireland.
Last June the company announced a €23m investment in R&D.
That enabled it to expand and undertake new process developments for its global customers and to supply innovative integrated customer solutions in the medical instrumentation, communications, industrial applications and automotive industry from the Limerick plant.
The investment announcement, which has Government support, will be made by Analog Devices CEO Jerald Fishman.
Minister for Jobs, Enterprise & Innovation Richard Bruton and Minister for Finance Michael Noonan will also be present for the announcement.

Don't forget the construction jobs during the building phase of the new design centre. That should be good for 100 jobs for a while. A much needed boost to the construction sector in Limerick.

As for the 100 R&D jobs.... I wonder where these people are going to come from. There's a severe shortage of engineers due to the fact that there's nobody doing it at University level.
