Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

6 packs of micro beer

One peculiar thing I have noticed in the irish market of micro/craft beers is that 6 packs have seem to have gone the way of the dodo, at least for the time being. Over Stateside, Canada and Australia when you walk into an offlicence you are given options of 6 packs of pretty much all the beer available.

This is not the case here - is it because it is too expensive?

note I know there are some breweries which still offer a six pack - 8degrees spring to mind but the general trend is individual bottles.

I actually found it annoying in the States that they would only sell in 6 packs, I didn't know most of the beers and didn't want to risk getting a dud.

The six pack was originally designed for the wife out shopping, so as they could easily pick them up. We are much more enlighten over here ;)

    Ha, Perhaps...

There is always the risk of picking up a dud and if you don't like the first bottle then you are left with a chore to get through the rest. Its still nice to have the option..

A decent number of crafts are shipped to the shop in 4 or 6 packs - in O'Briens for instance these are often flattened and left near the fridge so you can fill them as you wish

There is no price discount given for them, though. I suspect they're taken out of the 4/6 packs because it puts people off buying singles.

It'd be nice to have the option to get a discount for a 6-pack, but I wouldn't like the idea of only being able to buy a beer in a 6-pack, for the reason given above by schemingbohemia.

Carryout does a build your own 6 pack where they give you discount when you buy 6 bottles of beer. It's a pick and mix so you can buy whatever you like to get the discount. I think it's 10% off. You don't have to put them in a 6 pack container or anything.

Irish people who drink craft beer tend to buy one or two bottles of different beers. Buying in bulk doesn't interest us for day to day buying. It's different if stocking up for a party though.

I agree with the general sentiment already expressed. I found that having to buy six-packs in most liquor stores in the US quite frustrating as I wanted to try various different beers, not just one.

Of course, Americans have a different drinking culture to us, certainly amongst young people. People seem to buy large volumes of beer and bring it to other people's houses when invited; everyone then takes what they want once they've contributed to the pool.

In Ireland people tend to buy what they want for themselves and jealously protect it as they drink it.

Very true, I have experienced both the US and Irish side on many occasions.

Except where the event is all craft beer drinkers sharing bottles of specials or homebrewers where everything is shared.

I would not be impressed if I'd brought along a stash of nice session IPAs and a bunch of people who'd arrived with some cheapo lager started tucking into the craft stuff leaving me with nothing I want to drink at the end of the night. Not impressed at all.

Exactly! Although I have had it happen to me.

I have family and friends that love the "aul fancy beers" but not enough for them to buy them themselves.

That's why I tend to bring homebrew. If other guests cane it all, it's flattering.

Beer is displayed in 6 packs. It doesn't mean you can't buy singles. I do it all the time. Usually there are partial sixers on the shelf where one or two have been taken. You sometimes find what looks like a full six pack that someone has tucked an odd beer in. it can be disconcerting.

In the States which the OP was talking about you most definitely can't break the six-pack into singles in most places.
