Why do people clap?

...well I know its a sign of appreciation. But, do you ever think about why exactly do we slap two parts of our body together to make a noise? Why is that a sign of appreciation? (grabs coat, goes to pub)

We also cheer. How else are we to make noise and show emotion ?
