Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Road shoes: How snug?

Hi all. I'm new to road biking and looking to buy a pair of shoes. I am using a pair of shimano mtb shoes (size 45) at the moment with cleats. I went to my lbs yesterday and tried on 2 different sizes of shimano. A size 44 +45. I can't decide which is better for me. I can fit fine into the 44 with a small bit of wiggle room around the toe area. Is it better to have a snug fit on a road bike . I just couldn't decide in the shop yesterday

Snug without being overnight. You need to remember that your feet will swell slightly in warmer weather or when they get hot and so you need a certain amount of extra room for that also.

You don't want them too tight so possibly the best way is to put on two pairs of socks and select the pair that fits best.

I wear size 44 and they're a perfect fit, no looseness and I'm unable get a finger into the heel area when they're on.

Shimano shoes are renowned for being tight if you go by the size of your day-to-day footware - narrow more than short. If you buy them too tight you risk restricting blood flow and this will lead to premature cold and cramps.

The Velcro/ratchet straps will allow you to tighten the whole show on your foot sufficiently when wearing normal socks afterwards but allow room for swelling or if you wear thicker socks in winter.

I have two pairs. 43 for summer and 45 with two pairs of socks in winter.

I was just shopping around here in Cork for new shoes, i'm a 41 in my regular shoes but a few of the places i tried said add 1 to that as after a while on the bike your feet do slightly swell, and the extra room for manoeuvre avoids cramping which i sometimes suffer from.

Definitely go a size bigger. But I find width is the actual problem for me. I have to buy wider fitting shoes; Sidu Mega fit or Mavic Maxi.
