I believe the original Stelvio would be much better, but generally any second hand bike for the same money should be better.

Go second hand, or have a look at the Btwin Triban bikes sold by Decathlon.

Thanks is there anywhere in particular to buy second hand bikes as a beginner Im finding the whole thing a minefield

You're not the first to post here with pretty much the same concerns, so I'd prescribe an hour or so browsing previous threads of posters with around 400 to spend and looking for a first bike. You'll learn as you go and be better informed then to go shopping.

Also, measure yourself up, and by all means come back here with your desired bike size. Plenty of people on here willing and delighted to link you to decent bikes for sale in your size once they know what to look for.

New bikes for 3 to 400 quid are usually pretty pants. You'd be far far better off spending 400 quid on a bike that originally cost 8 or 900. Obviously people have budgets and costs can escalate, you can spent 4000 euro on a bike, but there is also a basic spending floor below which the quality of the bike and components can be very poor, and just don't make for a nice bike. It's worth breaching that level and buying something decent.
