Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I'm just annoyed I only put a tenner on it and didn't empty the contents of my Paddy Power account onto him, he has this and more

Naa I know that, but I would have thought he would have found boardman etc harder to beat.

Is it the advancement of power understanding and bike aerodynamics I wonder?

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 77,514 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Would Wiggans, Martin, cancellara beat this easily?
Yes, but that takes nothing away fron this performance (I think Cancellara would beat it by some way, but a track specialost such as Wiggo could go even faster)

    And the record goes....

Didn't do a single lap, other than the first, at over 18s did he? The mental pressure of something like that is phenomenal. Add the physical demands and it really was a fantastic performance

right, off to by a Trek.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,561 ✭✭✭Eamonnator

That is equivalent to taking about 2 secs off 100 metres World record.

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 77,514 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

Think he should at least finish off with the ice bucket challenge ....

Fantastic effort by Jens, he definitely saved a bit for the end a lot of his quicker laps even a few sub 17 seconds were at the end of the hour, what an animal.
So looking ahead, no doubt teams and sponsors will be "encouraging" Wiggins,Martin and Cancellara to have a crack at the new record.
Cancellara in particular will have access to a lot of data that will not be made public by Trek, he may mull over it but one of these 3 guys will almost certainly have a go at the hour within 12 Months.

I might have a go at it myself so. I'll put up the details in the training log forum!

Not overly impressed to be honest when you consider the previous "records" that had been set.

Moser in 1980 did 51.151 on a bike that I am pretty sure would be less aerodynamic if compared in a wind tunnel - same for Rominger's 55km bike and even Indurain had a lot less aero profile than Jens.

I am pretty sure we will Cancellera, Martin or Wiggo bettering 55km in the near future.

Hour Record Results (* "best human effort", ** previous record, *** to be ratified)

    # Rider Name (Country) Team Result
    1 Chris Boardman (Manchester, UK)* September 7, 1996 56.375
2 Tony Rominger (Velodrome du Lac, Bordeaux)* November 5, 1994 55.291
3 Tony Rominger (Velodrome du Lac, Bordeaux)* October 22, 1994 53.832
4 Miguel Indurain (Velodrome du Lac, Bordeaux)* September 2, 1994 53.040
5 Graeme Obree (Velodrome du Lac, Bordeaux)* April 27, 1994 52.713
6 Chris Boardman (Velodrome du Lac, Bordeaux)* July 23, 1993 52.270
    7 Graeme Obree (Hamar, Norway)* July 17, 1993 51.596
    8 Francesco Moser (Mexico City)* January 23, 1984 51.151
    9 Jens Voigt (Grenchen, Switzerland ) September 18, 2014 ***

that was enjoyable. Some distance to do. Wonder what his average speed was.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,630 ✭✭✭pelevin

Put 50 down euro earlier & turned it into about 80. Pretty stress-free bet - the only doubt was if he'd somehow go off course. Naturally subsequent thoughts of why didn't I go bigger but that's a lot better than thinking, why did I bet so much . . .

I worked it out roughly as 50kph+, I'll finish off the calculations in the morning.

    54 / 14 IIRC.

You're probably right. It would be interesting to confirm but the bike and the position Boardman used in his 1993 record (52.270km) look like they would comply with the current rules. Certainly Boardman wasn't stretched out any further forward than Voigt's position yesterday.

I think Voigt was very canny with his timing - as hour records go, he bagged a relatively easy one. Its not hard to think of a list of riders - not all of whom would be "headline" testers like Cancellara, Wiggins or Martin - who would be able to put in a 51km+ under those conditions.

Well Moser admitted that he used blood doping for his attempt. There are suspicions over 2 of the others in that list.
