Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

This is less suprising tbh. Fully deserved and undermines their CL win somewhat.

    Bribing refs?

In the CL or in the domestic league?

Jesus christ, has the title been taken off them too?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 41,926 ✭✭✭✭_blank_

One wonders how much Jose knew about this.

Christ, this is big news IMO.

I didn't even know it was being investigated.

lol wtf? i had no idea that this was being threatened. still, can't argue with it. in fact they probably should be punished even heavier. it's a bit ridiculous they can be found guilty of bribing referees and still be able to win the championship.

    according to BBC Sport:
Portuguese champions Porto have been excluded from next season's Champions League over alleged bribery of referees in the 2003/04 season.

The allegations relate to Porto's 2-0 win against Estrela da Amadora and their 0-0 draw with Beira Mar.

This sort of stuff is really sickening to see. I'm sure far more of it goes on than is ever discovered/punished.

UEFA pulled out all the stops in punishment there. Why not have them relegated and fined something? Poor conclusion all round though.

Ah alright, thats fair enough then. Do you know are the Portugese FA doing anything about it?

Ah well, still should be the next Portugese team in line to take their place:D

If Milan get into the Champions League through either of these ways it will be a complete farce. Who's to say anyone has to be brought in anyways?

Maybe one of the teams in the qualifying phase can just get a bye?

This really undermines Mourinho though in all fairness. Wonder if he knew about it?

    No Idea
Its(appears to be) the same situation as when Marseille won the title in 1993
they got done for bribing refs in league games so uefa coudnt take CL of them so they banned them from europe and the french FA demoted them for 2 years
Id be surprised if the portugese FA didnt follow suit

    Proof?

edit: didn't realise it had went to court

Mourinho may have known nothing at all about it so it's unfair to drag his name into it at this stage. I don't know of any charges being brought against him. They only drew one of the games 0-0 so maybe they weren't paying the ref enough!

If anyone is to replace them it should be the next Portugese team in line.

Even if he was blameless it does undermine his achievements at Porto

    Why would Milan replace them?

Milan did not do the same
they were not convicted of bribing referees

So does depends what kind of illegal jobs they were doing?

it really does undermine Mourinho imo, nothing suggests he was made aware of this, but it takes away form his champs league victory.

its probably going on more then people think to be honest, corruption is everywhere and its sad to see. destroying the game

The number of high profile cases especially in Italy recently highlights the growing problem

    Oooh, Jose Mourinho's magic,
    he wears a magic hat...

According to the reports Porto were deducted six points for it last season.... 6 points FFS, thats a joke.

I reckon Porto have got away extremely lightly for this one.

And now Mouriniho is managaing in Italy!! This is all very convenient and suspicious if you ask me.

i dont htink it does, neither of the refs were bribed in the CL games, they wwon that competition fair and square!

But if they had their league games easier than they should have been then they had an advantage in the CL.
