hi,

looking to get rid of my 00 focus and replace with a diesel. I travel 80 miles a day every day of the year? Have been looking at 1.6 tdci focus, scrappage would be a stretch at 17750,
Any advice?
also i asked before and was told to throw a question to an irish motoring site who give out free advice, does anyone know what site that would be?

Would you consider something a little older and alot better than a focus? Good cars, but if you're driving 80 miles a day you should get a better car:)

Overtaking ability is particularly important on those kind of commutes as there is plenty of opportunity to get stuck behind various vehicles.

You'll also have better residuals from these cars.

i dont doubt you mate but i've been driving my old 1.8 focus every day for the lastb nine years without any major issue so happy enough with a new focus.

I think the older ones (pre 05) were meant to be more reliable not sure about that though. In any case parts should be cheap and easy to find.

Focus sounds like it will do the job for you but I think you should strongly consider cars like the ones I posted in my above link. You could almost make your commute fun with the right vehicle!

1.8 TDCi will also be that bit cheaper than the 1.6 TDCi. 1.6 TDCi is much more refined than the 1.8 TDCi though the 1.8 would probably be a little bit more reliable.

1.6 TDCi was available in two different states of tune, 90bhp and 110bhp. The 110bhp tended to be on higher spec models and UK imports. 110bhp has a DPF which can give alot of trouble over time if you do short trips or city driving.

which would give best mpg on a forty mile trip? this car just goes to work and home every day so not a lot of short trips, so you'd get the 1.8? say this

I'd go for the 1.6 if I had a choice - much prefer that engine, even in 90ps, over the more powerful 1.8 diesel.

Both cars linked are UK imports - possibly ex. rental but maybe a bit old for that. Get a proper motorcheck or cartell check to confirm mileage and whether they have been badly damaged or not.

Focus with an armrest isn't a bad place to be. Very fuel effecient up to 100 km/h but will drop off if you spend long periods above that. Also great fun to throw around the bends on back roads.

if i was getting this car from a big dealership would i still need to do the motorcheck stuff?

My advice would be yes you should do it no matter who your buying from. Same goes for getting the car checked out and bringing an independent friend who can over independent advice to ya

Was that one linked earlier? I opened up a 1.6 and a 1.8 both from K***y's (swearing to me anyway

) and you could see the MPH clocks. Hadn't seen that one before

The metal plate on the front of that one would make me wary - only Focus's I've ever seen with metal plates are AVIS rental, and that's too new to be back.

How are all these UK Focus's ending up at Irish dealers?

Anyway, that same car if you brought it in yourself would be no more than €12,500, so not such a great deal. Plus you would get a third years warranty with the UK car.

I wonder if Keary's are advertising the three warranty that should come with that car?

They source them there similar to BMW dealers sourcing their "Sterling" approved used BMWs from UK dealerships. My current car was imported by a main dealer this way.

Tidy 08/09 diesel cars are still thin on the ground over here as car sales for those years were lower than normal.

i'm going in tomorrow so will ask them about the warranty, anything else i should be asking about uk imports?

Don't be fobbed off on the warranty, as a UK car they have to stand over year 3, although I do believe there are limitations on what is covered.

Also ask if they can change the odometer from miles to km's. You can change between metric and imperial on the trip computer (if it has one) for some features but not the odometer.

Check underneath the car for rust, rear subframe/suspension bolts rust very quickly. At 1 year it will only be surface rust but will need treating.

There is so little stuff around that loads of people are bringing Focus's over from the UK. My Ford dealer (in the middle of nowhere) is bringing them in, and even the retail part of our group is doing it - had a couple just turn up here.

Ford in the UK are mad to get rid of the last of the current model Focus's. Salesmen are calling owners of 09 & 59 models and telling the driver's they can supply brand new versions of the cars for lower monthly costs. My Dad had a call before Christmas - turned out to be utter rubbish from the salesmen, but some people probably get suckered in by the patter and seeing shiny new cars.

Think they were saying about £12,500 for a 1.6i Focus Sport 5dr.
