Mk4 fiesta rear shocks problem

Just finished changing rear shocks on my mk4 fiesta, but when i took the car down off the jack, the centre rod of the shock was sitting 1 1/2 inches too high at the point where the top nut is fastened in the boot As a result the shock is doing nothing Any ideas?

For the 34 of ye that had a look at this thread, the problem was the position of the retaining clip to the top rubber mount
