Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

He is one of two. An American starting soon also.

It's all relative; I heard of this the other day while doing a 260km cycle and taught it was mental. It's a never ending daily 320km cycle.

Most people who don't cycle or cycle a little think 260km in December is mental.

In the early days of bikes some lunatic went around the world in a penny farthing type bike. Prior to decent steels, wheels, etc. And of coarse decent roads. He carried it as much as anything.

Tommy Godwin set this record years ago...... on a bike, that weighed about 15Kgs.

Not to dismiss new attempts but hard to compare with old record; given weight of bike, gearing, roads, support crew for food and bike and probably medical/massage etc.

Yes but nowadays it's a lot easier to verify claimed distances.

A woman (of Latvian extraction I believe) rode solo around the world in the 19th century. She brought a repair kit and a gun with her. Took her over 9 months. I think her name was Anne. Didnt stop for coffee either...

I made a contribution. He will need loads of help: physical, mental, bike maintenance, nutrition, and stuff we can't even imagine. What happens if he gets saddle sores? There could be wind, snow, ice, heatwave. He is brave to even start.

I'm no stranger to excesss (both on and off the bike) but doing something so extreme over such s long time must have physical, physiological and mental consequences?

I'm sure he'll be OK - he'll have a long weekend to get over it this time next year, before heading off to work on Monday morning:pac:

Bear in mind that after securing the record for the greatest distance cycled in a year, Tommy Godwin kept going for another 135 days to take the 100,000 miles record.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,744 ✭✭✭diomed

I check his progress every day.
Now at 07:00 he has been on the bike for 1 hour 5 minutes this morning. It is 3 degrees with a 30 km/hr breeze at Milton Keynes.

He should have a good aerobic base for A4 in 2016.

4,700km this January and he's still only second in the Strava monthly leaderboard :pac:

Steven is going very strong. After six weeks he covered 13k km. Madness...

Anyway, his competitor doing well also with 11k km cycled so far:

The Bike Show podcast from Resonance FM has a really good show on this record attempt. Steve Abraham sounds remarkably sane. Well worth a listen.

A nice acticle on the man here. Well, more on the challenge actually; the man himself seems a bit of an enigma.

Some of the comments on the article are just depressing..."Frankly, if he can't beat a record set in 19 0 splosh, with all the support and technology at is disposal, he ought hang his head in shame."

    Jesus.

Over 20,000kms covered already this year. Going to break the 13,000 mile mark today. Really is fascinating.

He was hit by a moped this morning and has two broken bones in his ankle. It seems to be finished, for this effort anyway.

That is bad luck (or careless driving). Where did you read that?

Was wondering how these two lads were doing, now there is more than two...

Above forum is good source of info. It appears to me that an attempt is much like property, location location.. along with good support.
Kurt has a dedicated wife and a RV, along with a ridiculously flat area to cycle (Wednesday's ride 336.8km 135m). His average speeds are typically 30km/h ish meaning relatively short days on bike, meaning more time to eat well and sleep recover. Uses a recumbent to sometimes I think. His average heart rate is typically around 100bpm!!

Can't decide which lunatic I have bigger admiration for the smart American animal or the bloody minded Englishman. Abrahams changed his diet to low carb lately to pretty disastrous effect, in short term anyway.

Abraham due to hit the 100,000km year to date mark early next week.

(He must be sick, sore and tired of those roads around Milton Keynes!)

He had it pretty rough during the recent stormy weather - was down to around 200k per day!

From what I could make out that was pretty much diet related( I'm sure weather didn't help), seemed a crazy thing to do to make such a dramatic change mid event.

I've been following them both on Strava. Steve is riding in conditions that make it almost impossible for him to compete the whole year around. Kurt is doing it in much more stable weather conditions and on very flat terrain. Steve has about 170000 more meters of elevation this year alone, plus Kurt has found a nice loop that he seems to be sticking to most days now which is about 10km each loop. Not taking anything away from Kurt, just pointing out that its not really a level playing field at this time of year.

Another guy(Cycle Dr). Strava name) from the UK is starting his attempt in Jan 16 but he's doing the first 3 months in Australia where he is originally from before he returns to the UK to complete the rest

He did PBP as part of his schedule. He also rode over and back.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,098 ✭✭✭NamelessPhil

I met Steve at Brest on PBP this year. He had the 1000 yard stare of the hardened audaxer. I talked to him for a few minutes, it was like trying to hold a conversation with someone in a trance.

Is that the canyon mechanic? Is he not from Newzeland?

Maybe he is from New Zealand. I did see him say he was a mechanic and he's using a Canyon bike. I was just going by his accent and the fact he said he was starting in Australia.

    +1

Florida is ridiculously flat - the highest point is only 100m and that's up near the Alabama border. The peninsular part of Florida is even flatter. I've cycled there several times and it would be unusual to encounter a gradient of more that 1%.

Cycle_dr 1 starts his attempt tomorrow. He's about to pass 50000 Km for this year without being in any challenge. Have been following his rides the last two weeks and it looks like he has a fairly flat route picked out along the Adelaide coast line.

Interview with S. Abrhams main man.

The effect of convenience food was scary; kidneys working really hard and fatty liver! I was wondering why he changed diet midstream

I think Kurt will break record today, he only has to ride 175 miles!
