Is there any criteria these vans have to meet in terms of markings, type, etc? Got a strange story yesterday about a red transit type van with no markings other than a 'smaller than credit card sized' badge on the door saying what it was, someone had a bit of an experience when they went to investigate what the van was doing! Thanks in advance.

Going on what I've read elsewhere so I stand to be corrected, is that the plain red vans with the small label on it are survey vans operating on behalf of the private company contracted to detect speed on the roads.

The Garda vans are white and may have minimal markings on it or none at all. There is a hi-viz Garda one too. Look in the Vehicle Gallery Thread. Both in there.

The Go-Safe vans, marked up fully are for speed checks. Minimal or no markings they are just a survey van.

'Survey vans' AFIK they issue fines just like every other speed van, Go-safe or Garda, so calling them 'survey' would be incorrect.

One thing about about the Garda ones, after all the money spent on modifying them you'd think there would be a small black roller blind to cover the camrea window when not in use, but no, there's an ol' shiny bin bag used to 'hide' the camera lens :o

Survey vans are owned by Go-Safe and they don't issue fines.

Could you not tell by the Isle of Man registration plates ... ahh, it's just the company that is registered there and not the vans.

Seriously though, are the surveys not a waste of time? Is the criteria for enforcement not the number of accidents as opposed to the number of people who speed at a location? They can do surveys with the actual vans.
