Transporting car to UK

    Any one got ideas for getting a car from Dublin to London (Heathrow area) next week? Are there any companies or individuals who do this in Ireland? It can be driven or transported .... 1999 Ford Escort .

    Thanks Biko bout a lot of the links here are now closed ... Also Flynn in Carlow too expensive and NVD no longer doing it.
    I'd prefer someone in the Republic of Ireland.

    I need a trustworthy competent driver. Flight back from Heathrow will be covered if necessary .

    insured yes. Tax ran out a month ago and NCT just this month. The car has been off the road since my daughter got a job in London. Now she wants to get the car over, get it registered on UK plates, MOT, Tax etc. None of this can be done til the car is over there.

    Can I get a MOT here in the North?

    Just want to know if its feasible to get it to London and she is more than willing to sort stuff from there. Or could it be transported on a truck?

    Can't be driven with no NCT or tax, unless someone feels lucky.

    All for a 1999 ford escort? By the time you include transport costs however you get it over there, registration, MOT'ing it (it may well need work) and taxing it - It's probably cheaper to buy a car in the UK that already is MOT'd.

    Yeah I know .... I,ve considered this. Trying to figure out what's best.
    It only has 55K on the clock and is in terrific condition .... My 94 year old aunt has been its only owner..... she barely drove it.... so it's mint!
    It flew through its NCT here and the mechanics said it had barely no wear or tear!


    Not sure my 23 year old daughter is savvy enough to buy a second hand car herself in the UK.....
    Dunno what to do ..... maybe I should sell it here and send her the money ??

    I have used a lad called Kevin Whyte and found him very good. I have only used him for bring cars to Ireland from Uk but I am sure that job would be no problem. He is based in Roscommon

    When you say it's insured, who does it cover? You, your daughter, open drive? To be honest I can't see anyone other than a family member driving it over. Even then I can't see that it makes financial sense or is worth the hassle. There are some low mileage 99 Escorts on auto trader (not usually used for cheap cars) for £500 or less. The ferry, petrol, flight back and costs of sorting it out in the UK would eat that up and more, I suspect. Plus your daughter has the added complexity of insuring a car which was (theoretically) not built for UK. I say theoretically because of course it was but insurers like cookie cutter answers.

    Yeah ... The more I think about this the more it might be better to sell it here in Ireland . If the car was worth more it might make more sense going to the trouble of transporting and taxing , MOT etc etc. But the costs might almost end up being as much as the car is worth .

    Plus I'm a bit worried if the car gives her trouble when its over there it might be hard for her to get someone to sort it. She might be better with a small second hand run around .... Good 2nd hand car market in the UK isn't there?

    If you do decide to move it over to the UK (and it really isn't worth it, in my opinion), then http://www.woodsides.com/woodside-motorfreight are worth a call.

    I'm pretty sure they transport BMW's over from the UK so may do a good rate rather than sending empty trucks back to collect.

    Ha ! No. I took everyone's advice here and sold it . Best decision for such an old car !
