No idea- we're the opposite- once they started to walk, their poo is like porcelain lead shot. They go to the loo every other, if even this frequently, and its remarkably painful for them. Prune juice does help- but then they go to the other extreme. There doesn't seem to be any middle of the road.

Ivy that's good to hear he's doing better now.
People look at me like I'm crazy when I'm practically dancing for joy when she has a dirty nappy it's just such a relief haha (yes I need to get out more!)

Smccarrick have you tried kiwis and pears they might be less harsh than the prune

Girls, i'm still having problems with a refluxy/colicky baby and am thinking of moving him off avent bottles and onto dr browns. Anyone any feedback or experience With them?

Kiwis and pears, haha! I nearly throw a party if they eat something other than fishfingers- kiwis and pears is a bridge too far. Funnily enough they don't mind drinking the prune juice- I guess its just so damn sweet. I was in Tesco earlier and bought a tub of diced peach- anything to get them to try something else. Perhaps pears may feature on our next shopping expedition.

Just thinking- I have a silly amount of milk in the fridge here. Think I'll make custard and peaches for both of them this evening. I been warned under no circumstances am I to make bolognaise for a few days (I think I made enough to feed a football team last weekend- we were still eating it 3 days later, and I froze some as well........ Actually- if I use oregano and other mild spices- the kids love it. Even pasta sprinkled with oregano and extra virgin olive oil is well received, though they do insist on eating it with their hands, and the olive oil seems to get everywhere.

Ok- now they're being too quiet- better go check what mischief is underway.........

We gave up on Dr. Brown's- and used Nuk, which seemed to work very well for our two. Note- you can get latex or silicon teat for Dr. Brown and Nuk- go for the latex if at all possible, the kids far prefer it. There is a pharmacy in Blanchardstown shopping centre- on the top floor that specialises in Nuk and Dr. Brown- its worth a roadtrip- honestly.......

Thanks, will try get there over the weekend. I'm at the end of my thether watching the little man writhe in pain after his bottle. The gripe gives some relief but I'd rather try prevent the wind in the first instance. I assume its a silicon teat that comes with the bottle? I'd hate to say how much money we've spent on bottles and teats do far!!!

Don't I know it. We were going in and out of Holles Street just buying the crates of little Nuk ready made bottles- they were both on premature baby milk for months. Nuk have an online shop- but its not much cheaper when shipping is factored into the equation. Some UK based ebay folk seem to have found a goldmine of the teat and are selling them off- a few quid cheaper than here, but nothing I'd be writing home about. The baby events in Superquinn and Tesco are when its best to stock up on teat- if they have them, Superquinn are a lot better about ordering them in for you- Tesco don't seem to give a damn. You're probably looking at about 4 quid for a pack of two teat- and you're better off with the bigger feeding holes, as they seem to ingest less air.

Great news ivy! A is def more regular since she started walking!

Yellow hen - 100% advocate of dr browns - we changed onto them after 16 weeks ( started with avent at 13) she was beast fed before that, and the difference was unreal! We kept her on them for a good few months - maybe 8 , can't remember now, but we changed back to the avent as they are so much easier to clean! But the effort is worth it with the dr browns!! We ended up on Aptamil comfort formula also - and had to try a load of different teat sizes to get the flow right - u need to go up a speed with the comfort as its thicker - but the combination helped loads!

Hi DL, we tried comfort with avent too and we couldn't get the right tear so have up on it. What did you use with dr browns in the end? Today is only the first day but he still had bad wind during/after each feed, is that normal?

Ps... Am I sorry to see you're still here????! Hope you go soon.

Yellow Hen, I use Doc Browne'a bottles and love them! I had N on them as soon as I stopped BF and the same with E! They're a bit annoying to clean as there's so many parts and the teath are expensive but honestly I've found them amazing! We still have a colicky baby but no where near as bad as if we were using Avent! I also find that if you rub their tummy for a few mins before ya sit them up to burp it helps it move quicker.. Just my experience!

DL I hope ya go soon hun but from your posts it sounds like your little lady is too comfy :p I hope ya don't have to go through the section again! It wasn't as bad as the 1st for me but the Doc pushed me into it saying E was a huge baby and my biggest regret is I didn't try a VBAC as at 8-8 I think I could've done it myself but sure that's the way the cookie crumbles :) best of luck xxx

Thanks tigeress, will try the tummy rubbing and see if it helps.

As I lie here with O asleep on me I thought of another question! O is 9 weeks now and tends to take a bottle every 3-4 hours during the night. The odd time he's stretched it to 5 hours. Anyways, he's asleep and I'm debating waking him to give him his last bottle so I can go to bed. Is this a bad idea? Should I let him sleep and wake naturally? I just wonder if me waking him is preventing him learning to extend the time periods between his bottles. Hope that makes sense!

Yellow hen - I think when she was 16 weeks we should have been using size 2 for her age but had to go to size 3! Which was 6 months!
So with the formula - it took her about a week to settle - the difference in thick was requires different digestion effort from their little tums so I'd def give it a full week or 2 without changing again - my little one only had colic - seemed like hell...!! So reflux is a different story cos A just had wind and no acid if you know what I mean! She always puked after every feed a little tho and that didn't change after the formula / bottle change - the doc said tho some babies are just happy pukers! As in that element never bothered her! We felt we never could get all the wind up - after even an hr of winding and she would just scream and scream for hrs! We tried every position thinkable! This did improve alot after changing those 2 things tho!!

Tigress - it's impossible to know what's best to do about VBAC! I doubt myself every day. I'm finding it awful tough now cos cervix so unfavorable that its so possible ill hit 12 days over and have to have section anyway :( then even if I do go into labour he said there's a 50% chance it'll end in emergency section. It's literally the recovery and the hope it might happen that's keeping me going ... I do usually end up crying at some point during the day...! Frustration! Mostly CID I've made it this big battle with myself. All I want is to hold her, see her, and cuddle her! I just hope she's not coming out cos she's just not ready yet - alot of the time I just think ill never go naturally cos I'm not able.... Totally irrational. Only 2 days over today...its gonna be a long 10 days!!! Poor hubbie!
That's the other problem I feel guilty about - he took 2 weeks hols ( inflexible) to tue in with due date... Ummm he gets to spend them with a crazy me and not his second daughter and that's my choice... As in its not - but if I just said ok a section then she'd be 9 days old! Guilt..! He's fab tho - totally supportive. I'm lucky. I should be locked up for ten days on my own!! Thank god A has started walking - watching her is hilarious and you couldn't but smile!
Jaypers.. I'm at risk of turning this into the moan thread!! Sorry!
All I'm saying is there's pro's &cons to both ways and u made the best decision you could with the I do the have you! There's enough guilt around motherhood - even irrational me deep down knows the exit doesn't matter - it's the hugs and love and life!
I'm so excited to meet her...!!

O DL, its going to be great when it all does finally happen, get on that gym ball!

What ever way things pan out, it will be easier this time.

Its great that A is walking, that will make things so much easier.

Great news HS, busy summer ahead.

Having a 15 month old getting his 3 rd tooth is hell, he just can't handle it.

On Sunday, he will be the same age that she was when he was born, I find this mad as he seems so much more immature and babyish.

I cleared out all my baby stuff form the spare room at a sale recently and its is really hitting me now that from here on in its going to be school, cartoons and strife, no more cute quite babys every again.

J is 13 months on Wednesday so did a clear out myself. I think the only thing that stopped me feeling too bad was knowing we'll be trying again hopefully by the end of next year. I think when I've to pack those clothes & things away for the last time I will feel sad. Pregnancy & newborns are such a large part of alot of womens lives.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,339 ✭✭✭How Strange

Thanks for all the well wishes. We've been pretty much housebound and breastfeeding since I got home on Tuesday.

You just forget how intense this time is with a newborn. It's all about feeding and snuggling but it's hard when you've got a toddler too and he wants reassurance. He seems to be getting used to his baby sister he's quite insecure at the same time.

DL I really hope things get moving for you soon. It would be a real shame (for you) to not have for Vbac after fighting so hard for it. Your body could get ready very quickly so don't lose heart or hope yet.

Congrats how strange. Id say uts hard with a toddler in tow.
Dl how u get u vbac. Fingers crossed eh. But once you get to meet her soon it wil be worth it no matter what way she gets here.
I got to see my new niece yesterday. 5 days old. Was born on A's first birthday. She was tiny. I can believe A was ever that small. She was snuggled up in A's moses basket. A was like a giant beside her.
Myself and OH have been discussing TTC no 2 over the past few months also. We dont want a gap more than 2 yrs but been quiet happy with just the 3 ofus.
So finally decided about 2 weeks ago to stop preventing it as such. I came off the pill. So hoping now.

We can not work out the maths for one more and I am 40 next year so my clock is ticking so loud it is scary but we are very lucky to have our two. My eldest is going to preschool in September  Plus my baby is 23 months old

J learned to clap his hands today, been trying to get him to do it for weeks & then today he just did it himself like he always knew how.
He understands so many words & commands now & can point to whatever he wants, it's hard to believe that this time last year he was just this helpless little bundle :-)

I'm starting to think calpol is making O constipated, would that be mad? or is it just the teething.

That or milk is doing it, there is no other common denominator.

I don't think calpol can constipate - not a main side effect anyway but a never know!
    http://www.mhra.gov.uk/home/groups/pl-a/documents/websiteresources/con2030941.pdf

Teething usually increases in saliva and its acidity so increasing stool softness rather than hardness - but that's totally dependant on the child as maybe not drinking as much fluid which in general that could cause constipation!
    So hard to know :(

    Did u change milk?
Poor thing - raisins work the best for us! Well easier to get into her than prunes!!!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,185 ✭✭✭Tigeress

For the 1st time EVER N didn't poop today :( he has never had less than 3 a day so this is quite shocking for us! He hasn't had anything different and had his 2 cups of water and lots of fruit & veg as normal.. He's teething super bad though :( hopefully he'll go back to normal tomorrow! He's having the most rotten smelling farts too!
E has started with his Multi coloured poops! Forgot how the solids change it so dramatically lol!

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,624 ✭✭✭wmpdd3

We came to this possibility because this is how his teething spells go.

Night 1, wakes with nappy explosion. Chewing the cot etc. dribbling, if he doesnt have his beads on.

We give him a bath and calpol and back to bed, he might pass a golf ball the next morning then nothing but foul farts for 3 days.

We start the fruit, raisins, smoothies etc after the golf ball.

Finally, he'll poo again one night and usually a tooth arrives that morning. He might have had 3 spoons a day of calpol for these 3 days. i have a supply of Nerurophen for a few months but its run out so I've been on the calpol.

Constipation wasn't an issue on the Nerurophen, but its only really now that there's a tooth after each spell.

I keep getting letters from the doc as he is well over due his 13 month injection but I know with a temperature there's no point bringing him in.

Something the pediatrician mentioned to me: sometimes after a nappy explosion or diarrhea, the baby can be constipated. (She was wondering if L had had a dose, cos that might have contributed to his constipation).

I have a metallic taste in my mouth for the last few days and I'm afraid to google other, non pregnant reasons for it. :0

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,339 ✭✭✭How Strange

I only got that taste on my first pregnancy but it was around 8 weeks. Perhaps it's a sign of a mineral deficiency or something.

Packed up: I just sold it all.

I'm starting to identify with single parents, my other half is studying for exams and me and the two kids have to keep out of his way for a few days..... Can wait for the exams to be over.

Little man learned how to say 'Da Da' last night!
