Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

What age to start biking?

    Basically my son wants the Vespa PX200DX which has been growing moss in my garden for the last two years.

    But what age can he get his licence and insurance?.

    Category Vehicle Minimum age of driver

    A Motorcycles with or without sidecar 18

    A1 Motorcycles with an engine size of 51-125cc and/or a speed capability of over 45km/h and with a power rating not exceeding 11 kW, and with or without sidecar 16

    M* Two-wheeled vehicles with an engine size not exceeding 50 cc and/or a speed capability not more than 45 km/h 16

    *If you already hold a full driving licence for Category B (cars) prior to 21 October 2006 and/or either Category A or A1, you are automatically licensed to drive Category M vehicles.

    So, in this case, 16.

    Before you let him anywhere near a bike, get him some professional training. The ISM is pretty good (I found Joe in the Drumcondra ISM to be excellent)

    My dylexia can be a cvnt sometimes, is that a 'yes he can get insured and licenced for it', or simply a 'NO, not until he's 18''?.

    I understand that's a 200cc bike, in which case he must wait until 18. It'll not be cheap to insure.

    Didn't notice it was a 200 cc bike (my attention to detail can be a cvnt sometimes).

    Yup, he'll have to wait until he's 18 for that bike. With a bog standard 50cc moped, he'll only need to be 16.

    Not necessarily - a PX might only have........9/10bhp in the first place - you can ride a 1450 H-D on a provisional under the .16bhp/kg rule......

    A provisonal A licence, but sure you must be 18 to obtain one, which is what I said above. The only way his son could start younger was on a bike smaller than a 125 in which case he could apply for an A1 provisional at age 16, but as this is a 200cc bike, he must wait for the provisional A at age 18!

    could start out building up some no claims on a smaller bike from the age of sixteen though. that be what i did.
