Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

The interior build quality is poor in those Mark 4 Golfs. My GTi, although a good car rattled like nothing else, especially around the centre console. The rate of wear around the door cards was poor too. Various bits of trim fell off, airbag warning lights came on and had to be reset if you hit a hole which was a pain and an NCT fail.
VW spend a lot of money on interiors to make them seem well built but it's a pity they don't invest the same amount of resources into actually putting them together properly. I've been in Passats that were similar. I'd get a Focus before I'd get a 1.4 Golf. Better built, more reliable but without the image I suppose.

I have a 1.4 Golf (2004). So far it's been very reliable for me. I have the car 3 years now and have put up c30k miles (mainly motorway driving - 67k miles in total). In the 3 years I've owned mine, it hasn't cost me a fortune - I've got 4 new tyres, a new timing belt and brake pads changed. The car is serviced every year.

The only bad thing I would say is that the gear box is a bit sh1te and for a car of it's size, it's very heavy. Also, it's not overly comfortable. But I guess if you are looking for a solid car, it's worthy of consideration. The Ford Focus would probably be a better car overall but personally, I rather the look of a Golf.

You're spot on there coolbeans, the interior looks alright but it does rattle badly as you say, centre console is bad alright, It sounds like cheap plastic !

As for the airbag light don't go there, everytime I move the seat it comes on due to the connecters under it. But it's been good for a first car I spose :)
