Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

02 Gti Golf, looks clean with low mileage but from what I've heard, not much evidence of service history and I've a cartell report that looks..eh...awkward...

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

If it looks too good to be true, it probably is. These cars are not that difficult to clock and 45000 miles is very low for a 10 year old car, even if it's genuine. If you know someone with VCDS it may be possible to interrogate the engine ECU for mileage - some Bosch ECUs can store mileage information separately to the instrument cluster and this can be used to double check.

Ring the dear one and tell him you're prepared to come and look at it but will only be offering X and see what he says.

Only way to be sure of mileage nowadays is with documented fsh , read it and you will generally know if the mileage is as stated.;)

It just doesn't stack up and there isn't, if any, service history. The car that J linked is over budget but I might give a call and see what he says with what I have to offer...hate been cheeky tho!:D Cheers for the replys

Every time I see an ad that says eg."40 thousand miles on the clock" I automatically think theres 40 on the clock but more on the engine

any one else think this or is it just me

A car with genuine 40k miles should be in an almost brand spanking new state, not that hard to tell if its been clocked. Interior, steering wheel, pedals, gear lever should be in tip top condition, so is the engine bay etc.

    Bollox.

I can show you cars that look trashed after 20k of driving or cars that look mint after 200k of loving driving.

    Please do so.

I meant, cars that was in trashed condition with genuine 20k mate.
All I was saying that its easy to spot the difference between genuine and clocked cars that otherwise had a lot of miles in reality. Sure, not many would clock down a say 100k to 50k, more like, from 190k to say 90k and the tell tale signs are relatively easy to spot.

A couple of years ago I found a 96 golf 1.4 that had 60k on it....I was suspicious as hell....took it for a test drive and knew straight away that it was legitimate. The old bird that owned it before me even had every tax disc from day 1, stuffed into the tax disc holder on the windscreen....

Sometimes you can be lucky....more often not I'm afraid

It really wouldn't worry me as long as the seller has proof of mileage.

I sold my 9 yo Peugeot a couple of years ago with 33k miles on the clock. Yeah, I got a few cross-eyed looks, but once proof was produced, it was !!

I bought my petrol 9 year old car in 2006 with 64,000miles on it, I have the car 6 years now and it has 111,000 miles, my mileage is low enough and the mileage of the previous owners was tiny. On a Diesel car high mileage is more common so more reason to be suspicious.

Like the poster above you can get lucky

The other halfs parents live here intermittently and have an 01 and an 03 fiat between them

Less than 25k miles on each car, taxed, tested, and minded service wise, but they are here so little the mileage is low.

It was actually an issue at the last NCT as the tyres were too old!

you can also compare the milage from similar cars and years.

and work out the math, if you check out 20 cars and this particular one has several hundred k less miles than the others........

If anyone wants the report, pm me and I'll send it on....

When I seen it, alarm bells just went off and I usually listen to my gut when it comes to these things....

Indeed, just a quick example here. My friend`s father wanted to buy a car for work, a cheepo one preferably. There is a 99 Primera in the neighbourhood for sale so we went on to see it.
First, the seller seemed to be a dodgy man in his fifties, he tried to keep reassuring us that the car`s engine is bulletproof etc even without us asking.
The clock showed exactly 80011 miles, I quickly realized that yo man had it clocked but not even bothered with a random number, probably clocked down from 180k to 80k, and the 11 was test drive miles. The car was rotten, clutch way too heavy, brakes squealing, rust patches all over, signs of head gasket failure after a test drive etc.
A few weeks later-as my own project was on halt-had to buy a cheep work horse myself. Coincidentally a 99 Primera popped up on dungdeal, no NCT or tax or service history. Went to see it and after 10min chat and a quick test drive I bought it for dirt cheap with genuine 68k on the clock. The guy who sold it and the car both felt genuine and after a couple of days while changing oils and pads I inspected the car further and indeed the general condition of the car was in a state of 70k miles. ;)

Anybody know any mechanics that could do an inspection around the limerick/cork area? Might check another one out this evening

The number of owners/too many nct missed dates/too many tax missed dates, all coupled with no service history...just got alarm bells going

I've a 1980 car with just under 6k miles. Was bought and 'retired' soon after by it's elderly owner. Was then bought and used only for shows.

It does say in the ad that the car's had very little use, so it's possible that it was off the road for periods - this could explain both the tax/NCT issues and the mileage. A second possibility is that the car was off the road for periods following one or more accidents, which would also explain the mileage. Of course the car might also be clocked in addition to either of the above. The lack of SH alone would kill it for me. Either way, it's now marked as sold. :)

I've not heard that phrase before, but agree that if you get a feeling that something is not right that it's best to walk away.

Hope you find a good one soon. :)

Its how I justify it to myself on missing out on cracking deals:D

I actually believe that saying tho to be honest, has saved me hundreds of thousands over the years listening to the 'aul' gut so I'm not going to stop now...something will turn up....

    Cheers...

I got a 99 punto a couple weeks back with 49k genuine miles, new nct, taxed 6 months and unmarked - engine bay like factory, €600. It drives like brand new, not a rattle or a squeak and has not a single leak anywhere. Threw it up on the lift and the exhaust is also a new, o.e replacement as are the breaks, timing belt done, FFSH, 1 owner. Wife turned her nose up at it, then took it down to the shops, and I've not got near it since. Her car is now parked up!. There are minters out there, even if a Punto is not your cup of tea.
