Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Secret / Hidden pubs in Dublin

    Hello all,

Myself and my friends are doing the 12 pubs of Christmas but with a twist. We decided it would be more interesting to visit at least 6 hidden or secret pubs in Dublin. Like a pub that doesn't look like a pub either from the outside or maybe the inside.

I've tried googleing but cant find anything posted recently.

Does anyone know of any pubs that are hidden or secret??:pac:

    Thanks :)

The Hacienda Bar on Little Mary St in Smithfield.. have to ring the bell to get in (Ask for Shay).

The VCC in Temple Bar.... just a door.. not obviously a bar.

I'd also add the Conradh na Gaeilge pub on Harcourt Street just because it really looks like something you'd find over in Connemara except it's in the basement of a Georgian building in the middle of Dublin City Centre.

The Royal Oak in Kilmainham - haven't been there in years but it's the most unlikely pub I think I've ever been in.

The Dawson Lounge. Smallest pub in ireland apparently, but a cracking pint of stout.

Bowes on Fleet Street. No obvious sign of it being a pub until ya walk through the door.

If you're feeling brave, the Hideout, tucked into a housing estate behind the Big Tree on Dorset Street. Cast of Crimewatch drinks there.

I think the hideout is closed down now.

Marys bar and hardware on Wicklow St.

You never know when you need a bag of nails and a pint.

Are those things actually for sale? Maybe next time I need some random bit of hardware I'll go and find out.

Most of the suggestions in this thread are not 'secret or hidden' at all, but this seems like a genuine one.

La Cave on South Anne st. Had some amazing nights in there. Great spot. Not a "pub" as such, but jasus, it's a great place to go for a drink.

Gravediggers in Glasnevin. And another vote for Hacienda.

McNeill's on Capel St. Used to be a music shop and front window still looks like one. Given that and the size of it, it's easy to miss even if you're looking for it.

    +1 for the boot.

right beside control tower for those who dont know.

    gravediggers ?
    that internationally acclaimed pub....
that made several list of pubs to drink in

the very definition of secret and hidden

The Library bar in the Central hotel, Exchequer St. It looks like just a hotel and you have to go in past reception and up the stairs and round a corner. But it's worth it and has real books.

Since the OP (in 2014) was asking about it for a 12 Pubs of Christmas - just a note - I'd say there's very little chance that Shay would let a 12 pubs crowd into the Hacienda.

A lot of the pubs on this thread wouldn't be 12-pubs friendly but they're all the better for it!

It's not easy to find if you don't know the area. Not exactly on the main st.

c'mon now its not particularly hard to find, its about 200 yards from the main road.Add to the fact its on numerous must visit lists and beside Irelands largest/most famous cemetery I dont think anyone would have too much trouble finding it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,623 ✭✭✭thegreatgonzo

Exactly it's 200 yards from the main road. I was living in Dublin for 4 years before I heard about it.

On a sunny day after a Dubs game you should see the amount of people on the green outside the gravediggers, it really is a very well known pub. wasn't it used for the smithwicks ad with Norm from cheers.

10 yards if you jump the wall..

    Not recommended when drunk.

There are a couple of basement bars on Georges Street.
Izakaya Bar, The Chelsea Drugstore, and (Probably the most secret of them all ;)) the unnamed bar that is designed as a speakeasy. Although I am pretty sure you can only gain access with an invite.
Not to be confused with the blind pig/speakeasy on Suffolk St.

Chelsea drugstore has a shop front on a busy road its hardly hidden or even slightly out of the way.

Yeah, I could have and should have phrased it differently, but my internet was acting up and then it went down altogether.
I meant that there are some basement pubs on Georges street (and named them), and the most hidden one (Which was the one that i was referring to) has no name, but it is not one of the previous ones.
When i have tried to tell people about it before, they assumed i meant one of the other ones, so i tried to get them in first, to avoid that being the case again. But i did not word it correctly and was unable to amend my post before my internet connection dropped.

O'Loughlins in Georges st, Dun Laoghaire.
It's a real gem, small enough place, best Guini I have ever tasted. Barrel is directly under the tap on the counter, there's no till, no women's' loo( have to go upstairs next door), and the gents is an open air urinal. Family run for years.
