I have an Exchange 2003 server that I need to retire, and move about 10 mailboxes to the cloud, the email is currently STMP and the MX records point to our Public IP address.

What is involved to moving to Office 365 and moving all the email off site?

    Thanks

Can't remember if you can do a cutover from 2003 - but I know for definite the Dell Migration tool works between just about any email system. About €10 per mailbox though.

EDIT Scratch that -- read this...

    Easiest option:
Archive the users mail to PST's
Create their new accounts in the cloud
Login on their laptops via Outlook to their new accounts and then import the PST's to the mail in the cloud (File, Import , PST)

Hi What about re pointing the MX records of the domain

That's pretty much the final step, no matter which migration option you decide.

If you click on Domains on the O365 admin portal - you will find all of the necessary entries you have to enter for DNS MX etc. You will have had to enter a TXT record to verify your ownership of the domain first though.

    Edit:- Re domains and O365 --> http://office365support.ca/adding-and-verifying-a-domain-for-the-new-office-365/

For 10 users the PST method suggested is the way to go, might need outlook 2010. Office 365 has help guides and wizards to take you through the MX changes when you are ready to go. Its a fairly elegant transition must say.

Outlook 2007 with sp3 and updates still works.

having recently moved a few hundred mailboxes across different sites 2007 can be very hit and miss with working with office 365, Some worked and some didn't. All on sp3 and fully updated.

migrationwiz for a hassle free migration.

I would also advise you to migrate the mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Office 365 with the method suggested by Jamesd above but you may face complexities with Ex-merge (To export mailboxes to PST) and powershell cmdlets (To import PST into Office 365). So, I think the better approach would be take help of professional tools like Stellar EDB to PST Converter, that efficiently exports Mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Office 365 directly. You just need to select the mailboxes, enter the details of Office 365 for connection and rest leave it on the software.

completed 1st migrate to the cloud, 10 mailbxoes from Exchange 2003, went very well

    setup domain on O365
    setup DNS records
picked a suitable time for customer to have some downtime on email
migrate MX record to point to O365
Disabled Firewall rules for SMTP (25) and OWA ( 443)
    exmerged requited mailboxes to pST
setup new outlook profile on users pcs
imported in PST files as required
left these sync up to cloud
disabled all exchange services on sbs servers

setup Active sync for users on Iphones/ Android
    Email now in cloud.
    went very smooth : )

On that day that 365 went down I was only after convincing management to move over to 365 in a site and we arrived that morning at 9am to start the migration :)
