Replacing a gas firplace with an open fire

Hi

We are hoping to replace our gas fireplace with an open fireplace. Is this difficult\expensive to do?

You would need to hire an rgi to carry out the work , gas pipe would need to be removed from fireplace and also the gas valve , usually located beside the fireplace , would need to be removed and supply pipe to valve capped , a soundness test would need to also be carried out before and after works , and a cert issued on completion . Shouldn't be too expensive .

Thanks for the reply Sullzz. I guess if I go to a Fireplace company they will have someone on their books that will do this as part of the job? Basically, we have a granite hearth and back-plate(?), something like the image below. We need to get a new surround as well, basically because the one we have is horrible!

Look at insert style stove, cost a little more to begin with but will save you in the long run. And you'll get better heat out of it.

Thanks. I've no problem spending a bit - especially for efficiency. We were only looking for a fireplace for occasional use as well (and for wood, not coal).
