No news yet on roster cuts but being reported that we will keep 4 TE's (Donnell, Robinson, Fells & Davis) on the roster. I really hope that's not true as outside of Donnell none of the other 3 are worth hanging on to. Hopefully we might snag someone off of waivers.

One of my favourite prospects in this years draft, Yawin Smallwood had been cut by the Falcons. Not one for our 53 but if the Falcons don't put him on their practise squad I'd like to see us add him

Kelcy Quarles & Curtis Painter have been cut. Would be very surprised if Quarles isn't added to the practise squad and it's good to only be carrying 2 QB's

Actually just found an updated list

    Israel Idonije (DE) -

Kelcy Quarles (DT) *signed to practice squad pending waiver wire

    Bennett Jackson (CB)

    Kellen Davis (TE)

    John Conner (FB)

    Dan Fox (LB)

    Jamaal Johnson-Webb (OL)

    Curtis Painter (QB)

    Adam Gress (OL)

Trindon Holliday (WR/PR/KR) - Injured Reserve

Mario Manningham (WR) - Injured Reserve

Sounds like Corey Washington has made the 53 which is great news and we will only carry 3 TE's it seems

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

Waiting to see if someone will release a TE we could use but nothing yet

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

So the 53 man roster is as follows

    Quarterback - 2

    1) Eli Manning

    2) Ryan Nassib

    Running Back - 3

    1) Rashad Jennings

    2) Andre Williams (rookie)

    3) Peyton Hillis

    Fullback - 1

    1) Henry Hynoski

    Wide Receiver - 6

    1) Victor Cruz

    2) Ruben Randle

    3) Odell Beckham Jr (rookie)

    4) Jerrel Jernigan

    5) Preston Parker

    6) Corey Washington (rookie)

    Tight End - 3

    1) Larry Donnel

    2) Adrien Robinson

    3) Daniel Fells

    Offensive Line - 10

    1) Will Beatty

    2) Justin Pugh

    3) JD Walton

    4) Geoff Schwartz

    5) Weston Richburg (rookie)

    6) Brandon Mosley

    7) James Brewer

    8) John Jerry

    9) Charles Brown

    10) Dallas Reynolds

    Defense

    Defensive End - 5

    1) Jason Pierre-Paul

    2) Mathias Kiwanuka

    3) DaMontre Moore

    4) Robert Ayers

    5) Kerry Wynn (rookie)

    Defensive Tackle - 5

    1) Cullen Jenkins

    2) John Hankins

    3) Mike Patterson

    4) Jay Bromley (rookie)

    5) Markus Kuhn

    Linebacker - 6

    1) Jon Beason

    2) Jacquian Williams

    3) Devon Kennard (rookie)

    4) Jameel McClain

    5) Spencer Paysinger

    6) Mark Herzlich

    Safety - 4

    1) Antrel Rolle

    2) Stevie Brown

    3) Quentin Demps

    4) Nat Berhe (rookie)

    Cornerback - 5

    1) Prince Amukamara

    2) Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie

    3) Walter Thurmond III

    4) Zack Bowman

    5) Trumaine McBride

    Special Teams - 3

    Punter - Steve Weatherford

    Kicker - Josh Brown

    Long Snapper - Zak DeOssie

Surprised to see only 3 RB's so think we could make a move there before next week. We are not putting Schwarz on IR so have to carry 10 line men for the next 3/4 weeks to allow him time to get fit.

Kerry Wynn is a bit of a surprise to make the 53. Delighted Washington had made it now let's see him produce when big boy football starts.

Think we will be pretty solid on D this year but really worried about our O. The line outside of Pugh is a huge question me & it's hard to know what the starting 5 will be against Detroit. You have to hope Larry Donnell can produce at TE but I won't hold my breath that any of the 3 break 250 yards this year.

Really have very low expectations this year, will be lucky to get 6 wins IMO

Said it to someone earlier, we won 5 out of 5 in preseason, but if we even win 5 in regular season, we're about on par.

    Don't expect a lot.

Saw the Giants v Steelers when i was in NY earlier in the month.....i heard they have a very new offense but they ran everything; i mean everything. Maybe they were saving Eli as he was switched after 2 plays but it looked odd. Was this merely a testing exercise to practice their running game?? PS Metlife stadium is awesome!

    Our "unofficial" depth chart.

    Donnell starting at TE.

Beatty, Richburg, Walton, Mosley, Pugh is the o-line with Schwartz out injured

Kennard, McClain, Williams at LB with Beason still out. Excited to see Kennard this year & the progress from Williams.

    no OBJ for week one

    Dang hammy just won't heal

reckon we won't see him much beyond kick returns early part this yr

At this point I'd be surprised if he manages more than 300 receiving yards this year. He hopefully will come on late in the year but he has missed way too much time at a position that is a tough transition from college to the pros. Should be a nice weapon for Brett Hundley next year

It's a much better roster than we have had for the last few years. Last year has thought me not to be too optimistic but if Eli can play like the Eli of old there is no reason we can't reach the playoffs. I don't see a division win but I don't agree with the 5-11, 6-10 records being thrown around, especially after finishing 7-9 last year after starting 0-6. New offense sure but the roster is better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,477 ✭✭✭✭Knex*

There's a trend in the media at the moment whereby many are thinking we're closer to first pick in the Draft next year, than we are to making the playoffs.

I'm not very optimistic, truth be told. We have the best D in the NFC East though, by a solid amount I would think, so that might just see us through. But there is so many question marks on the offensive side of the ball.

I agree completely. But defense wins championships and as you say we have the best possibly in the East. It's a lot of ifs but if JPP plays like the old JPP, with the upgrades at CB, I think it could be a top 10 unit. Of course how much the defense will be on the field depends on the offense. Sure there are a lot of questions on offense, but lets not forget not much more could have gone wrong on offense than did last year and we started 0-6 and still scraped a 7-9. The offense has to play better this year, no way Eli can be that bad again. And upgrades on defense at CB + fit again JPP + Jon Beason means we should be ok

Also lets not forget, it's not as if the offense has ever been outstanding. I'm the biggest Eli fan going and he is clutch when it counts, but outside of the playoffs the offenses have been statistically average. If Eli and the offense do enough the defense can carry us into the playoffs and then anything can happen. I'd predict 9-7, 10-6. The Cowboys defense will be awful and I don't see the Redskins being that good. The Eagles should win the division but it'll only be by a game or to, the NFC East is always tight. We have every chance of a wildcard

So Schwartz is placed on short term IR, and won't play for us until week 9. Christ.

Signed former 9'ers OLman, Snyder. He's versatile, but not exactly great, from what I can tell.

"not exactly great" is very generous. He can do a job at run block but it poor at the pass.

Eli is getting sacked a lot this season.

I agree with everyone's pessimism in here. I think we can get 7-9 (which is a depressing sentence to type).

    Our game plan tonight:

    1. 3 runs and hope for a 1st down

    2. If 1st down gained repeat until 1st down is not gained, get the best punter in the NFL to down the ball inside the Lions 10

    3. Hope the Lions make a mistake that results in a pick 6 or strip 6

    4. If the ball is turnover inside fieldgoal range kick the field goal on 1st down

    5. If outside Field goal range repeat steps 1, 2, 3 & 4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,050 ✭✭✭boccy23

    Could be very true.

I am forever hopeful so could see us doing something on offense. Can't see us winning, but something like 30-17 or 34-20 is possible.

Detroit on D is nothing to be feared.

The following players are inactive tonight

Snyder, Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring), Charles Brown (shoulder), James Brewer (back), Markus Kuhn (ankle), Kerry Wynn, Jay Bromley.

Disappointing that our 1st & 3rd round picks from this years draft won't feature.

It sounds like our o-line will be Beatty, Richburg, Walton, Jerry, Pugh. I may be mistaken but I am not sure that line has played together at any point in pre-season

Jon Beason will start at MLB with McClain & Williams joining him.

Larry Donnell will start at TE

    How can we win tonight??

The 5 key players to my mind are DRC, Jaquain Williams, JPP, Rashad Jennings & John Jerry.

DRC will surely be tasked with covering Megatron for most of the game.

With Bush & Bell as good pass catchers out of the back field Williams is best equipped to cover them.

JPP can help out DRC by getting pressure on Stafford.

Jennings & Jerry need to have strong nights in the ground game to keep Eli from having to throw the ball more than 15-20 times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,477 ✭✭✭✭Knex*

I think Richburg getting a baptism of fire against Suh is up there, in terms of things to watch.

    Don't envy the fella! :pac:

Also, if Prince is back at 100%, I would not be surprised to see Fewell putting him against Megatron on occasion, similar to last year, despite the noises about DRC being #1 from the Giants camp.

Definitely. He asked to be released though, I think, so not sure what the situation was. Purely game time related?

Would be very happy to add him to what we have.

Embarrassing display. Really need to get things going. Eli and the OL really need to get their act together. I'm not sure Eli is ever going to be a solid QB in any system. He's just such a liability on the field.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,989 ✭✭✭wawaman

Regardless of what has gone on in the offseason i always think of the 1st game as a blank canvas and see what happens. But my god that was depressing. Same oul, same oul, cant defend deep, cant run and cant pass. I had hoped the new offense would at least look slightly better than last year

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22,477 ✭✭✭✭Knex*

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't really think Eli is the issue. We just have nothing else going for us on offense, any QB would struggle, IMO.

Schwartz out for half the season, and Beckham being injured for a few weeks is depressing as well. We really need both, and even then, I think we're still an average to poor offense.

So many question marks, and bit part players, being asked to suddenly show something that they never have.

At least Donnell showed some promise, but aside from himself, Hankins and JPP, I can't think of anyone who came out of the game looking good.

The only thing we can hang our hat on at the moment is our run D. Everything else needs to improve, sharpish, or we are picking in the top 3 next year.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,317 ✭✭✭HigginsJ

I don't even know where to begin.

Hankins had a stellar game & Donnell did pretty well. Aside from that I don't think any other player deserves credit.

Eli is just awful. He is clearly not communicating what he wants with the players (see the role out play to the right where Cruz & Randle spent 10 seconds blocking rather than trying to come open) He is being paid like a top flight QB but I would seriously take a lot of the better back-ups in the league ahead of him. Give me Hasselbeck, Sanchez, Hill or Henne and I'd be more confident

I don't know, we will be here in 6 weeks time at 1-5 and giving out and asking for changes in mid-season but we know it won't happen.

I don't see that JPP is worth a new contract as he can't seem to get QB pressure any more, nothing more than a run stuffing end now.

Beatty is due a cap hit of $5.5 million next year so I would look to move him on unless he turns things around dramatically.

Randle & Jernigan are wastes of a roster spot and Washington needs to be given a chance to stake a claim rather than carrying these 2 guys next year.

Prince has a near $7 million cap figure next year, he needs to take a paycut he is no way near a number 1 corner and we better not get notions of paying him like one.

At least 2 INTs, for sure. Think our D will do a bit better, but would not be surprised to see us lose 21-7, or something similar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,043 ✭✭✭KrustyUCC

    all round bad play

laughable how open you leave Lions best player for 1st TD. also need to make that tackle on Stafford

worried about DRC ... that jam on inside to Johnson was so weak. he looked lost on a lot of their receivers

    Blocked punts

dropped passes from Jennings, Cruz, Jernigan

    rushers running free on QB

    QB/Receivers never on same page

    Another 2 INts

4 attempts to score from 1yd out

2-13 we give up 26 to TE who burns past our LB like he's not there

Missed tackle on Stafford at goal line

Tc has some job to try to get everybody up to scratch

Simplify the O and D and build from there

  • Registered Users Posts: 942 ✭✭✭tgdaly

Don't know where my false sense of optimism came from last week, I was completely wrong. offense was poor in pre-season but I just put that down to the fact that it was pre-season. There are no excuses at this stage, that busted roll-out play where the 2 wide receivers were both blocking instead of looking for the pass was just embarrassing. The wide receivers also didn't seem to understand the hand signals Eli was using to audible at the line. Running game got stuffed both Jennings and Williams didn't look good. O-line couldn't block anything really to be honest. And I'm the biggest Eli defender going but even though he didn't get much help at times, when he did get good blocking he still flat out missed some throws that a back-up should make. Defense was ok against the run, couldn't rush the passer or cover but who can cover Megaton anyways? The D should get better and I see a lot of teams struggling against that lions offense anyways, they were impressive

I really found it hard to be optimistic but held out a small bit of hope, we really were dreadful & if the Lions hadn't committed so many penalties they would have completely blown us out.

That play you mention was just awful, the lack of communication on so many plays astounded me really.

    BxLh82hIUAAyIgl.jpg

6 blocking 4 rushers, and he's still about to get pummeled with nobody free.

    This is surprising.

    http://www.bigblueview.com/giants-vs-cardinals-2014-game-time-nfl-schedule-week-2-news-preview-recap/2014/9/10/6132043/eli-manning-ny-giants-rumors-news-analysis-detroit-lions-arizona-cardinals-pro-football-focus-grade

    Extract:
The raw numbers for Manning are, indeed, unbecoming:

    18-of-33 for 163 yards, a 54.5 percent completion rate.
    Two interceptions
    A passer rating of 53.0
So then, how did Pro Football Focus give Manning a grade of +1.2, including +1.1 in the passing game? That grade, incidentally, was tied with for the fifth-best grade given out by PFF for a quarterback in Week 1. Let's look deeper and find out the reason for the solid grade. PFF has helped us out here with an 'Outside The Box' piece on Manning's play, in which PFF's Steve Palazzolo writes "his performance wasn't as bad as his 4.9 yards per attempt and 53.0 passer rating would indicate."

The Giants dropped four passes Monday night. Only Philip Rivers of the San Diego Chargers (seven) and Joe Flacco of the Baltimore Ravens (nine) saw more passes dropped. Flacco, incidentally, threw 62 times. Manning, per PFF, lost 40 yards in completions thanks to those drops, third-most of any QB in Week 1.

Thanks to the pressure he was constantly under, and the struggles of receivers to get open, Manning threw away two passes. Only Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins (four) and Derek Carr of the Oakland Raiders (three) were forced to throw the ball away more often.

Out -- Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring), James Brewer (back), Markus Kuhn (ankle), Devon Kennard (hamstring)

    Questionable -- Weatherford (ankle)

    Probable -- Jon Beason (foot)

Yea 5 of our wins last year came against Josh Freeman (1st start for Vikes) Matt Barkley, Scott Tolzien, Terelle Pryor & Kirk Cousins. You'll notice none of those players are NFL starters this year. I am sure we will take advantage of Stanton as well!!

Not sure how we have lost this game. Killed ourselves, really.

Yeah, some encouraging signs, but holy shit, do we make some dumb ass, frustrating errors at times.

Eli and Donnell have stepped up, WR's need to do the same now. Not good enough at crucial moments. Separation improved, but still not great. Some of the drops are terrible.
