    I'm looking at an escort on english plates, guy based in galway. Whats the deal with people selling these cars over here on english plates?
    Would there be issues me vrt'ing it even though he has had the car over here for 4 months without vrt'ing it? Car is suppose to be vrt'd within 3 days as of arriving in eire as far as I know. I'm worried about buying the car incase I end up buying a lemon of a thing which will have issues vrt'ing.

    What do ya reckon?, the guy is telling me all sorts of sh!te and I dont know whether to believe it or not.

    I know that but why dont they vrt them and then sell them... Im wondering is the car even legaly in his name or still on the previous owners name hence the car being still on english plates. Can an irish owner have their name on a english log book with an irish address?

    All you need to register here is a car, the V5, and the money. Whether or not the car is a lemon is a whole other story.

    Get a HPI check done on it.
    Get a ford specialist to give it a once over before you buy.
    Make sure you view it at the sellers house.

    A lad I know on irishmoc.org is abit of a ford head and is gonna come with me
    and give the car a good once over before I buy it.

    Maybe do this yourself and cut out the middeman

    No, not possible. That car is still registered to the last keeper's address. What you can do is fill in the V5 document, put your Irish address on it, then send it off. They'll reply to you sending back the V5 document, and a letter explaining that they've made note that the car is exported, but they can't add you to their system.

    Because you have to give your pps number when paying the VRT on them.
    pps no = you have to pay tax (aswell as Vrt and motor tax!!!) if you start bringing over a lot of them.

    xr3i's can be picked up for pennys in the UK....the RS Turbo is the one that's holding it's money.....

    XR3i --- no more than 2,500 for a really good one....
    RS Turbo----could set you back around 4 or 5 for a nice one....

    The guy is looking for 2,500 but I reckon he would take 2k for it baring in mind its not vrt'd nct or taxed.

    I saw a few xr3i's on ebay.co.uk for 600 - 950 pounds with an mot on them which is for nothing at all really. Then again buying on ebay kinda freaks me out. If the car turns out not so good I may end up legaly having to pay for it.

    Autotrader.co.uk dont have any decent examples on it, ones with no mot etc with full of rust.

    HPI check will be ueful for stolen/written off.As long as he has the V5 & the above checks out OK you shoudl be able to VRT it & transfer it to you name all in one go. I'd say it's only going to be €300 to clear that. Go into the VRT office to clear it with the guy there.

    Irish guys tend to ask alot for these cars as they feel the are sitting on a gold mine. I would be happy to shop about.

    Car that old will only be liable for the minimum VRT of 315 Euro, I'd imagine (this may be going up in July, though)

    just a final question here,

    If and when I arrive in the UK and get a car,
    After I fill in the v5 document and send it off to wherever it is in the uk that issues me the new one how long will it take for me to get the V5 back here in ireland? Your suppose to vrt a car within 3 days so I believe so surely I would not have the v5 document back by then? Would the owner just give me the v5 and take it back with me to Dublin that day and vrt it the following morning?

    It can take a couple of week to sort out the whole process.....I had to pay €1800 vrt on an 89 205 GTI, ordinary 205 would have cost me around 350 like op says....

    You can insure the car here with the english plates and you will get away with it for a while (most i've ever made it without paying up is 9mts;)), if anyone threatens to take the car off you then cough up the vrt as they will charge your for strorage and add 25% onto the vrt for non payment.....

    Well the VRT on an 80's escort xr3i is 315 euro as I have checked and double checked. Thats grand for me so, I probably would not drive it though until I have the irish plates with the exception of driving it home of course as I know my insurance company will give me tempory cover to drive to the ferry and off it again to get it home to Dublin. Nothing overly complicated about it really when I think about it.

    You'll be fine just make sure you get as much paperwork as possible off the seller...most uk cars come with a great service history it would be sad to drive home without it.........

    Just had a look on the vrt calculator and the RS Turbo isin't listed.......that must be the one you'll get creamed with vrt on like the 205......:mad:

    it's hard not to drive your pride and joy when it's sitting in the yard......vrt or no vrt..:D

    hi, i bought a 06 BMW in england last xmas and i am driving with english plates since. The VRT is €11,500 but it comes down to €7,500 after the 1st of July so am holding out. No grief from cops so far but its taxed in england and I have insurance with AXA here.My g/friend lives in England so will try to work it by having the ownership in her name and getting her to go to Revenue and convince them she is relocating..worth a shot for €7,500.00...think she must own it 6 months

    You fill in section 11 only (I'm pretty sure), it relates to export of the vehicle, and take the rest of the v5 with you. You need the v5 to vrt it when you bring it over here - give the little slip to the person you buy it off and they post it off to their vro.
