We will be putting on a staged reading of 'Eclipsed' in Druid LaneTheatre, Galway. This play is set in one of the Magdalne Laundries and deals with the women who are incarcerated there and the nuns who rule over them. This is a moving, sad and funny portrayal of life in one of these institutions. This reading coincides with International Womens day Friday 8th March as we endeavour to keep the flame lit for all those women and children who were oppressed under this cruel and harsh system. Ticket proceeds go to COPE GALWAY.
    Tickets available http://entertainment.ticketsolve.com/shows/873491630/events

    Dancing at Lughnasa
by Glencullen Musical and Dramatic Society

Lughnasa is coming early this year! Celebrated this April(9 to 13) at Easter time in the Mill Theatre in Dundrum. Brought to you by Glencullen Musical and Dramatic Society (GMDS).

Dancing at Lughnasa is a 1990 play by Brian Friel. Set in Glenties, Donegal in 1936, the play is loosely based on a true story involving Friel’s own aunts. The narrator remembers a last magical summer in his aunts' cottage when he was seven years old. The house is filled with bustle and work and music and the vibrant sisters of the family. Friel paints a loving portrait of life in Ireland of the 30s.

The play takes place around the Celtic harvest festival of Lughnasadh. Love and happiness seem possible for the five Mundy sisters as they welcome home their frail elder brother who has returned from a life as a missionary in Africa. The family is together this summer however times are hard, economic and social pressures stress the family despite the strength of character of the sisters and the future is uncertain.

Bernard Doyle who directed The Field with GMDS last March is directing this play. Many years ago 'Dancing' was the first play Bernard directed. The experienced members of GMDS know the play very well. Different versions of the play have been seen over the years. The whole team is very excited to be creating an authentic, funny at times, yet hard, sad and emotional play.

We have an excellent production again and we want to call on everyone to come and see the play and also pass the message on to as wide an audience as possible. This is an especially good opportunity for the Leaving Cert students studying the play to see it in real life. We have just a weeks performance for this show and the energy between a good audience and cast on stage is magic!

Thanks to all who turned out for readings and auditions for the plays in January. Standards were very high and we have the good fortune that our director had some difficult decisions to make! Congratulations to our now hard-working cast for this production who are: Kate Mundy by Ruth Fitzsimon, Maggie Mundy by Emma Smith, Christina Mundy by Eimear Slattery, Rose Mundy by Saoirse Doyle, Agnes Mundy by Sabina Bonnici, Michael Evans by Peter O'Brien, Gerry Evans by Brendan Phelan, Father Jack by Liam Corrigan.

Glencullen Musical and Dramatic Society as always welcomes new and old members. We have a musical and a play each year and other activities when enough members are interested in running them. There many other ways to be involved from front stage, backstage, front of house, PR, Props & set construction. If you would like to get involved please make contact (come and talk at rehearsals, send us email glencullen.musical@gmail.com, visit www.gmds.ie).

The play is a much loved production by actors and audience alike. The 1990 Abbey play won both an Olivier Award [1991] and Tony Award [1992] for Best Play. The original cast included Rosaleen Linehan as Kate, Anita Reeves as Maggie and Bríd Brennan as Agnes. Dancing at Lughnasa was adapted for film in 1998 starring Meryl Streep as Kate Mundy and Brid Brennan repries her role as Agnes again. The film won an Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actor in a Female Role by Brid Brennan.

The show will be opening April 9 and run until the April 13. Tickets are available through the Mill Theatre Dundrum. Phone (01) 296 9340. Website www.milltheatre.ie.

‘Clean livin’ don’t happen in a dirty town.’

Barnstorm Kilkenny Youth Theatre performs KoHL, devised by Droichead Youth Theatre with Sharon Cromwell.

Mia Swan, who has been looking desperately for her beloved sister, turns to Max Cole, a private investigator. She admits ‘I can’t say I’ve had the world’s greatest family background’ and fears for her sister’s life. The Prohibition has been in situ, to Leon Antonelli’s greatest advantage, for seven years. He runs a ‘regular theatre’ with dancers and a show for his customers, but Julia Stone, a fearless News Reporter, knows the real game. All she needs is evidence. As she goes undercover, the story of this underworld unfolds. We jump into the workings of Leon’s organization, kept company by the spirits of four dead dancers.

Kilkenny youth theatre takes a trip back in time, to when gangsters, illegal booze, and sprawls were in full swing. Following their foray into the unreal world of Gormenghast last year, Kilkenny Youth Theatre now take on a slice of real history, The Prohibition. In true Film Noir style it has the private eye, the femme fatale, the gangsters and the molls. Max Cole seeks out the truth, everyone else likes to lie. Leon runs a slick illegal booze operation, while the great and good of New York City try to unravel his plans. Who knows what can happen in dirty town?

With a cast of 15 young people based in Kilkenny, KoHL will spring to life with film noir style, panache and a dose of tongue-in-cheek.

Where? The Barn, Barnstorm Theatre Company, Church Lane, Kilkenny

When 11th-13th of April at 8pm. There will be a matinee on the 13th which will take place at 3pm.

    Cost 10/8euro conc.

    Book Now 056 7751266 or anna@Barnstorm.ie.

KoHL is performed with the permission of the NAYD as part of their New Stage programme. Kilkenny Youth Theatre is a proud member of NAYD. More info at www.nayd.ie.

“DEAR CORK…” EVERYMAN SEEKS PERSONAL MESSAGES FOR UNIQUE STORYTELLING PROJECT

Letter gathering project led by Carmel Winters, Writer in Residence at The Everyman, Cork. The public are invited to send letters which will become the raw materials as we bring to life a wealth of Cork stories, past and present.
    header2.png

Is there a letter in your keep that tells a story? Or perhaps a letter that hints at a story that hasn’t been told – but should be. The Everyman invites you to forage through your family archive and find a letter that reveals something of the relationship between those who left Cork and those who stayed behind.
“We believe there are thousands of such stories, lying in bottom drawers and bureaus, in boxes and inboxes all over Cork and further afield. We invite you, the public, to become an adventurer in this quest by searching out a letter with a story that deserves to be told and sending it to us.” - Carmel Winters

Letters will be collected and read by the Everyman and Carmel Winters, who, along with local theatre professionals, will use a selection of the stories as inspiration for a storytelling project. There is no guarantee your story will be used but every letter will be read and considered. The Everyman aim to make a selection of the letters available for public display, while ensuring that participants’ need for privacy is fully respected and honoured.

Letters can be submitted at your local Library anywhere in Cork City or County and at the Everyman. They can also be photographed or scanned and then emailed to the Everyman directly at dearcork@everymancork.com, or posted to us at: Dear Cork, The Everyman, 15 Mac Curtain St, Cork.

My show “Neil+1” Comedy Improv takes place on Sunday 7th July at 5pm in Smock Alley Black Box Theatre as part of the “10 Days In Dublin” festival.

It’s a unique improv comedy show featuring myself and a random stranger. Completely unscripted, a random member of the audience is selected to come on stage, and that person becomes the “+1″ in the show. He/she is free to say and do what they wish, and it’s up to me to make it entertaining for the audience!

I have been performing comedy improv for many years both in Ireland and abroad. Aside from ‘Neil+1′, I have has also performed improv with No Drama Theatre; Laughalot Improv; Duty Free and most recently, Coastbusters Comedy Improv. I have taken shows to the Body & Soul Festival; TedFest and Impro Fest UK to name but a few.

10 Days in Dublin is a multidisciplinary, open-format, arts festival. This means that the festival includes all types of art or performance: music, comedy, theatre, film, painting, sculpture, and more.

Scabs is a superbly written and spectacularly performed play which will premiere in 10 Days in Dublin this week.

Scabs runs nightly at 8.30 pm from 4th-6th July, in the Pearse Centre (birthplace of Padraic Pearse!), Pearse Street (beside the Trinity Capitol Hotel).

It is the autumn of 1913, and Dublin is caught up in a full blown class war. A war that Nora Kelly, feminist, suffragette, and member of the Irish Women Workers’ Union, is prepared to fight to the bitter end. Her husband Audeon is a staunch socialist and there is no lower life form to both than a “scab” – a person who works during a strike. But as their food runs out and their young daughter sickens and starves, both have to face the hard truth that the politics they’ve dedicated their lives to are threatening the life of their daughter. Tensions creep into their marriage. Violence breaks out on the streets. Difficult decisions have to be made. If they give up, are they condemning their child to a future no brighter than the present they fought so hard to change? But will a better, fairer world matter if little Mary doesn’t live to see it?

Written and Directed by Naomi Elster
Performed by Áine de Siún, Robert Harrington, Seamus Whelan, Conor Scott and Sarah Minto

Tickets are just €10/8 concession and available from http://entertainment.ie/tickets/listings.asp?q=scabs&search=Search.

    Cork Repertory Company Presents

    MOLL
    by John B. Keane

    Directed by James Horgan
    Lighting design by Jamie Feehily

Starring Fionula Lenihan, Eoin Hally, Charlie Ruxton, Stephen Wyley and Laura Harte.

A delightful comedy by Ireland’s premier storyteller ‘Moll’ is a hilarious look at life in a rural Irish parochial house.

The play is set behind the doors of a presbytery in the 1970’s and follows the exploits of the resourceful priest’s housekeeper. Moll is a dedicated but single-minded woman. Indeed, at times, she wields more power than the Canon and has a definite agenda of her own that includes the introduction of bingo, a strict regime for the curates in her care and, perhaps, a little something for herself into the bargain!
If the story of three priests and a housekeeper sounds familiar then you are probably a fan of the equally funny ‘Father Ted’. John B.’s play is the undoubted inspiration for the successful TV series as all the characters are there – three frazzled priests, a housekeeper, the quirky locals and even the Bishop makes an appearance. This housekeeper though is much more quick-witted than Mrs. Doyle.

James Horgan, director of the play, had this to say, “Even though it was first performed in the early 1970’s, ‘Moll’ is just as funny and popular today because it appeals to our sense of fun and how easily we can relate to the characters it portrays. John B. Keane’s characters were drawn from the real people he knew. Their realness and his own wicked sense of humour combine to create a comedy that will always be loved.”

The production stars well-known Cork actress, Fionula Linehan, in the title role and Cobh native, Eoin Hally, as the hapless Canon. Pitting their wits against the always-prepared Moll are the two unfortunate curates, Fr. Brest and Fr. Loran, played by Charlie Ruxton and Stephen Wyley respectively. Representing the ‘quirky locals’ is another Cork theatre stalwart Laura Harte, who takes on the role of dipsomaniac, Bridgie, and director James Horgan briefly steps out from backstage to play the all-knowing Bishop.

    Tickets: 10th - 13th July all tickets only €10,
    16th - 27th July €15, €12 concessions, €10 groups of 10 or more.
To book call the Cork Arts Theatre on 021-4505624.

4EVERBOYZ a new comedy play has kicked off and is running until the 20th July in the Sean O'Casey Theatre, East Wall.

4EVERBOYZ follows (fictional) 90's Dublin boyband 4EVERBOYZ and their attempt to regain their position at the top of the pop charts. But there is a problem, they don't quite look the part anymore, the dance moves are not quite there anymore and there are a few internal rifts to sort out, oh and a song or two to be written!

So come along to the Sean O'Casey Theatre and have yourself a great laugh. For tickets call Box office: 01 8509000, or 0874111869, 0877573416

I have 3-grandparents who emigrated from Irelandin the early 1900's. I have written a 3-actplay about one of them. It concerns a bizarreand wonderful event that occurred in 1957, involving my grandfather McCoy, thatforever changed the lives of our family. It is being staged, under the auspices of the Irish Heritage Club ofSeattle, in March of 2014.

I would like to share this story with those whom I think maybe interested. It is presently beingpublished by Lazy Bee Scripts of Great Britain. The Irish-American Theater of Cincinnati has it slated for futureproduction. You can learn more about myplay, A Rose for Danny, at the following web-site:

What would happen if the PEANUTS gang grew up?
Our beloved comic strip characters are re-imagined a decade later as hormonal teenagers with serious issues. CB's beloved dog has died, causing him to question the existence of an afterlife.
His best friend is too burnt out to provide any coherent speculation; his sister has turned goth; his ex-girlfriend has been institutionalized; and his other friends are too inebriated to provide him any sort of comfort.
But a chance meeting with the artistic kid -- the target of bullying -- offers CB peace of mind and sets in motion a friendship that will push teen angst to the very limits.
Drug use, suicide, eating disorders, teen violence, rebellion and sexual identity collide and careen toward an ending that's both haunting and hopeful, while posing the question - do we really want to grow up?

Starring: Jordan Smith, Jamie O’Herlihy, Angela O’Callaghan, Ciara Buckley, Timmy Coffey, Michael McLaughlin, Lauren Lahive and Gemma Collins

    Hello all!

I am delighted to announce that our play 'Click' is being performed for 2 nights only at Axis, Ballymun next Friday 23rd & Saturday 24th August at 8pm and we would love to see you there!

Click combines the wit of a Dublin Bus driver with an exploration of the difficulties of being a modern man.

On a fishing trip to Croatia, Pauly and Jacko, stroll through a field when Pauly hears a click. Panicking that he has just stepped on a defective land-mine left over from the war he stands rooted to the spot afraid to lift his foot. As they wait for rescue talk turns to life, love, limbs, why Pauly’s wife cheated on him, how Jacko discovered his ex-girlfriend’s little secret and what it means to be a modern man. As the hours pass not only are their lives in jeopardy but so is their friendship as buried secrets threaten to destroy everything.
