Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

    Clicky

40 figures and a more dismally conservative bunch you'll go along way to find - two members of Boyzone‎ on the list, and one of them is still alive! No Van the Man (he'll be glad) or Rory Gallagher. No Robert Boyle, no Francis Beaufort, no Arthur Wellington, no Edmund Burke, no Jonathan Swift.

Be careful not to mix up Daniel O'Connell and Daniel O'Donnell when you vote.

That is f**ing dismal indeed. Being the Tubridy Show, I nearly expected to see Inbredward on the list. Urrggghhh:mad:

Greatest Irishmen? Well rock stars and boys band warblers do not come into this category!

There are only three decent candidates who are:

    Collins
    Lemass
    Pearse

The rest are not great men. They are entertainers and the odd failed politician!

Idiotic list, none of Ireland's greatest scientific minds, such as Callan, Boole, Stoney, Walton.

But yet you have Danial O Donnell and Louis Walsh, feck sake

No Flann O'Brien, Ernest Walton, Jonathan Swift.

Ireland must be in real trouble going by some of the people they used for the greatest Irish person ever.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,992 ✭✭✭✭gurramok

Never heard of Christy Ring before.

Ronan Keating who cannot sing is on the list along with Louis Walsh, are they having a giraffe??

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 489 ✭✭Trashbat

I voted for James Connolly, a scotsman.

In fairness this poll seems to be about as scientific and balanced as an episode of family fortunes.

Are you sure you don't mean King William of Bongo, because your suggestion wasn't Irish?

    Charlie f**kin Haughey ffs???

Do we hate ourselves so much that we'd include the most corrupt Irish politician ever on a list of the 40 greatest people in Irish history? F**ckin idiots.

"Ah sure fair f*cks to him, sure didn't he get away with it"

F**kin have a bit of self respect and awarness ye idiots, he bilked the people of this country for the entirety of his reign in the most cymical of fashions, he ws a f**kin crook of the highest order, he should be disintered from Irish soil & placed on a boat of sh!te & f**ked out into the Atlantic.

We commissioned Ipsos MRBI to conduct a survey of the Irish public asking them this same question

I love to know who they asked

Don't think I will bother voting for any of them.

The list was compiled from a market survey of a thousand people. They could not name active politicians or anyone from RTE, so that explains aunty gaybo’s absence.

It’s a ****e list, but does the average Seamus Public know much about the likes of Boole etc. It appears not.

It's a toss up between Yeats and Joyce really - they've done so much to promote the intelligence of Irish people, although a few more lists like this and that river's gon' run dry.

    Mr Michael Collins.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,838 ✭✭✭Nulty

I think you gotta consider who the person you would vote for, would vote for.

Yeats would vote for Pearse IMO.

Therefore Pearse deserves the vote. Am I too blinded by logic?

Joe Dolan would vote for Gately, etc.

    Dr.Noel Browne
    Michael Collins
    Sean Lemass
    Daniel O'Connell
    Charles Stewart Parnell

The top 5 in my opinion, from that list. Daniel O'Connell gets my vote though.
