Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Unregistered Childminder

    Hi guys!
    So I was just wondering if it's illegal to be a childminder and not be registered.
    As if, no one really knows you do it. It's all cash in hand and not even the council or social welfare know.
    I know somebody doing this and I was thinking of asking them to mind my child but since she is not registered im not sure anymore. Thats why I wanted to know what the legislation says.

    Not all chilminders are required to be registered, I think once they mind more than 3 they must register (off the top of my head and it's a whole since I've needed to know this info)

    Accepting payment in cash doesn't imply any wrongdoing. She may or may not be tax compliant but let her and revenue worry about that.

    I'm not sure how you would know social welfare don't know she minds children but again I'm aware of people who are earning income and on social welfare all above board. (I would know this from completing their tax returns)

    Anyways what I'm trying to say is all that matters is, is this person capable of providing suitable care in a suitable environment for your child?

    There are people well paid to worry about her tax and social welfare compliance so don't worry about it for free

    Thanks very much. I understand if the person is capable then it shouldn't concern me whether she pays tax or not. The reason I was asking is that I'm a bit specific with many things and if someone is not being taxed or claiming social welfare and having another source of income it just seems wrong to me (I'm just too honest....) and if someone is doing that it must be because they are hiding somethings or trying to break the law which is there for a reason..
    I dont know. Maybe I'm over thinking everything a bit too much.

    A childminder can earn 15k tax exempt a year and only pays a set amount of PRSi so there is no excuse.
    I would at least want them to be registered with childminding Ireland as then they definitely have insurance and soon it will be mandatory to be garda vetted too.

    There is no legal requirement to register with the local childcare committee if they are only minding one child.

    Childminders can earn 15k tax free but they pay a fixed rate or PRSI. I would be more worried about insurance then registration,I would ask them to register with Childminding Ireland.
