Lots of info but not much detail.

Is he full/part time or contract?

Who did he make the complaint to? Was this in writing?

IMO you can't fail an appraisal without warning - what other discussions were had? How is his performance being measured?

What meeting was he in? Did he receive notification in writing about the meeting, and its' agenda etc?

If it was Disciplinary, was he allowed to bring a witness? What written follow-up did he receive?

Union might be handy here - if not try NERA.ie or Citizens Information.

    Best of luck with it!

What would your son like to happen now?

There is nothing that YOU can do, unless you're a solicitor who he has engaged to represent him.

There are things that HE can do.

But before going into all that, he needs to think about what his performance was like, and what else might be going on here.

For example, if he's a trainee doctor, then failing might be about his course rather than just a performance review, and there might not be any options available. If he's a cleaner working for a contracting company, then the employment-law focussed suggestions above are more relevant.
