I've a friend who has been subbing for a teacher since the beginning of the academic year. It's a job that is probably soon to be vacant and I'm wondering will it have to be advertised or if my friend has any entitlement to just carry on in the role at least to the end of this year.

Afaik every role has to be advertised, definitely in an ETB anyways. However provided your friends hasn't done something strange they're likely a shoe in even with interviews

Oh sure in a great position and the school are pleased with them no doubt. It's just a niggle I have in my head from when I was grubbing around for hours and something that was said to me andI can't remember the context but it's left the idea in my head!

In my school no one is being replaced, all the hours are "absorbed". The only exception was a specialist optional subject. The replacement had 7 hours and now 4 hours as it is an exam year. This subject is being phased out.

for the remainder of the year, it will probably not be advertised and filled as is because its less than 26 weeks. However they could well advertise it to see if they can get someone more qualified or suitable with the promise of work til summer.

Yeah fully qualified and am pretty sure the school are happy with them too which is an asset in case of interviews anyway

They could be pretty secure then. Well as secure as anyone on a part time contract.

I would imagine they are safe until the end of the year. Just advise them to keep quiet. We had somebody in a few years ago for the last few weeks of term. Officially sick leave, but common knowledge that the person wouldn't be coming back. The short-term sub was only out of the dip and there was no way she was being kept long-term. We all knew it and she embarrassed herself with over-confidence and constant plans for the year after. She was so upset when she wasn't kept as she just assumed the role was hers. Couldn't understand that an NQT would want to be very very lucky to secure 22 own hours!

Yes I've seen this happen too, even to non NQT's. Concentrate on making themselves indispensable this year and next year will follow.
