Best Twist?

What are the best twists you've ever seen at the end of a movie?

    Some examples....

    Sixth Sense (
    Bruce Willis was dead
    )
    Unbreakable (
    SLJ was causing the accidents
    )
    The Usual Suspects (
    Spacey was Keyser Söze
    )

I'm looking for the kind of twists that make the audience gasp, that will make you put your hand up your mouth and say "oh my god!", that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

I remember seeing the Usual Suspects in the Screen in Dublin when it came out. The ending just came out of nowhere and was like a slap in the face.

I saw The Sixth Sense in America before it was released worldwide, so I didn't have people coming up to me saying "you're going to LOVE the twist" (and I'd be looking out for the twist from the opening sequence onwards). I went into that movie knowing NOTHING about it, other than it was Bruce Willis' latest one, so I REALLY loved the ending (because I wasn't expecting a twist).

    Any others? (Use spoiler tags!)

    - Dave.

yeah, memento was a pretty twisted film :) never knew what to expect, and the ending was amazing.

Fight club had a nice lil twist to it too :)

the usual suspects tbh, by far the best twist ever.
followed closely by the sixth sense, fight club & unbreakable.

    Wild Things

There was several twists that just shocked me completely.

Also a very nice threesome scene, so that gets it extra points.

    Usual Suspects
    The Sting
Fight Club (this film is f*cked up)
    Shawshank redemption
    Sixth Sense

The Sting has a good one alright.

Actually - didn't Midnight Sting have a semi-twist in it at the end too?

    Ah who knows.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Empire Strikes Back were two other good twists.

The Usual Suspects, I think was the best twist ever. Must confess I thought Gabriel Byrne was Soze.

Runner up would probably be Minority Report.

A great movie for plot twists is Dead Man's Curve.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,164 ✭✭✭Space Coyote

The best has to be The Usual Suspects. The ending is fantastic.

    Runner up, Sixth Sense

Well, most of the best ones have been mentioned.

    So...
    The Negotiator.
    Pretty decent twist.

There was a movie about 10 years ago, called Under Suspicion (I think), starring Liam Neeson.

That had a pretty good twist...

Other than that, I have to agree with the general consensus : The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Arlington Road were all very good. And The Usual Suspects the best ever... :)

[the only problem I had with Wild Things - and a few other similar movies - was that it had a twist, then another one, then another one, and another, and another... It was TOO over the top...]

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,507 ✭✭✭Asuka

Oh yeah, I think I saw that one
It was centred around a basic 'innocent person being framed' story, and how he struggled against injustice to prove himself innocect, but it turns out in the end hes guilty.
    Is that the one?

The usual suspects best twist ever! :)
Fight club, sixth sence, Star Trek 9 Insurection
    same race!

Cant believe noone mentioned The Crying Game. Well, i know why but still :)

The unbreakable ending was spolied by the fact that the film was so badly flawed, you just didnt care about the twist. It gave the impression that since Shaylaman (sp) had done something nifty with the sixth sense, he had to do the same again.

Actually now that i think about it, From Dusk til Dawn has one of the best twists ever and its not even at the end. I saw the film not knowing what it was about and about 40 minutes in , it was like i was watching a different film. This was probably due to overdevelopment of the early story rather than a good twist tho :)

Gene Hackman was in Under Suspicion I think, but really really good twist in that.

The Eagle has Landed with Clint, good twist and twist again in that.

All that have been mentioned are good films,
cant believe Dead Mans Curve wasnt mentioned tho, its one of the most twistiest films ever made.
everyone turns on everyone just to get a good grade point average in college

also, despite it being a overall poor flick, i liked the twist in Swordfish.... oh and Halle Berry is a very "talented" actress.

oh and The Score had a good twist aswell.

Man, I love this thread. Memento has to win cause it throws you around the place with twist after twist through the whole movie, excellent. Of course the Usual suspects coz I didn't even know who Kevin Spacey was when I first watched it and I thought he might actually be a cripple, thats down to great acting though. And the Arlington Road twist was just magic

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,537 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Arlington Road was particularly clever in the way it tied up all loose ends with the media coverage at the end. Faraday had a motive, and witnesses who heard him say that they were going to pay.... very well done.

I'd like to nominate Clue (1985), for its very end scene wtih Tim Curry. Oh ya.

everyone killed someone except the butler who turned out to be an undercover FBI agent. It actually got very complimacated towards the end wit lots of twists.

Ahh good old rte showing the classics!

Nine Queens was interesting in that you knew that there was a twist but you're still kept guessing right to the end.

Although I saw through The Others quite quickly a lot of people I know were surprised by the outcome.

The Vanishing (1988) has an extremely chilling ending which I won't mention anything about. I know everyone reads the spoilers anyway!

They made three endings - whichever one you got to see depended on when you went to see it. Or that was the idea. They're all on the video.

Lads, don't put the spoiler tags in tbh. Luckily enough I've seen all the movies that people have put spoilers in for, but some people who haven't mightn't be able to resist the temptation to highlight. Anyone who's seen the movies will know what you mean by 'the twist', so there's no point in even typing out what the twist is.
