    I have just been reading through this link:

    d) All civil servants above clerical level are totally debarred from engaging in any form of political activity

    So how come Politics is full of teachers, doctors, nurses, county council workers??

    Their all employed by government departmnts so there civil servants

    Public servants are not always civil servants.

    There is so much ignorance on these boards about who or what is a civil servant or a public servant, how their pensions work, how much of a pay cut they have taken, how allowances work, why the pension levy is the same as a pay cut, the rules about politics, the difference between the public service and commercial semi-state, why a councillor is not a public servant etc.

    It wouldn't be too bad if it was simple ignorance of the facts, too often it is a prejudiced ignorance displayed by some posters who are anti-public servant without knowing anything about the public service.

    afaik

    All teachers may be nvolved in politics

    Local Govt employees below a certain grade may be involved

    Gardai, Defence forces etc may not

    Doctors in the publlic service may be involved

    By "involved" I mean active at all levels including standing for Dáil or Seanad Eireann.
